NASA's new biocapsule is about to change the world.
Invented to treat radiation, this thing is the closest we’ve gotten to the promised self-repairing injectable nanobot.
Apparently wood burning fireplaces are really, really, really, _really_ bad for us and everyone around us.
This makes me incredibly sad. Also, some other stuff about religion cause this is a Sam Harris article.
Clear a stuffy nose in 1-2 minutes.
With potentially permanent benefits, if you have the discipline. Very cool that they cited a few double-blind studied on this phenomenon.
Philly Triathlon
In light of getting in better shape lately & generally being healthier, I’m signing up for this bad boy in June (the Sprint, not the Olympic). Any other takers?
Organic Food War
So I keep hearing this debate. Many people feel that buying organic food is crap because the major organic farms are using pesticides that may be more harmful that the chemical version. Also, It would take more organic farms to feed the world than it would non organic. Nor would be would we ever be able to produce enough food to feed the population with out GMO’s! blar blar blar.
I have had a stiff neck since Bill and Maggie's wedding.
Over two months ago! While I managed to make it through much of the night maintaining a medium to strong whisky drunk without embarrassing myself (much — or that I know of), it seems I drunken passed out in bed in some sort of odd position that left me unable to move my neck much for a week. Slowly, it got better, but about a month ago, it plateaued. I used to be able to push my chin up to crack my neck — no longer! It can’t stretch that far. Peering over my shoulder to see oncoming traffic or catch a fly ball can be a surprisingly painful experience if I didn’t take any ibuprofen or stretch earlier that day. Even sitting on the couch in the same position for too long can cause it to stiffen up a bunch and I have to stretch to be able to turn my head again.
In short, I am old and Bill and Maggie owe me a new neck.
Milk: The Liquid
Let’s talk about milk. I’ve been a big fan of whole milk for a long time. I like waking up in the middle of the night and pouring out a big old glass of milk. I usually drink it in one gulp and it’s very fulfilling.
Anyway, I’ve been going the skim milk route for about 2 years now. Occasionally, I’ll go back to the old favorite. This is what brought me to post about milk.
I just had a cold glass of whole milk. It tasted like heavy cream (after my skim-conversion). Here’s the catch though: I liked it.
What are your thoughts on milk?
Al Franken for President in 2016.
Seriously, I haven’t heard a politician talk this candidly in… well, ever. Especially about health care!
Getting rid of shampoo.
Would I be going overboard if I switched or do you think there’s some merit here?
How to naturally reset your sleep cycle overnight.
Long short… don’t eat! Your food cycle is more powerful than your sleep cycle. Awesome! Science!
Wolfram/Alpha calculation engine provides awesome nutrition labels.
Just plug in your recipe and get a label. Very cool!
Three plants that will grow your own fresh air.
Another amazing TED talk, though it seems like a lot of care…
Stevia Finally Gets FDA Approval
Stevia is a naturally occurring sweetener that was originally banned by the FDA in 1991 amid controversy that they did so under corporate pressure. Stevia, being a naturally occurring plant, wasn’t patentable, so a lot of companies were against it.
Well, it seems the FDA has wisened up and are going to allow its production. And while I still have an almost crippling distrust of any sort of processed or manufactured food product, overall this seems a very good thing as it means less aspartame and sucralose usage, both of which should be completely off the market due to their adverse health effects.
Doctor said I need a backiotomy
Ugh. I’m going to my primary doctor today to get a referral for Novacare who, hopefully, will fix my back. It’s not getting any better and I spent a good deal of yesterday laid out on the floor trying not to move.
I had being old.
I'm getting a hot stone massage today
From this place:
About a month and a half ago, the first game of softball of the season, I ran in on a ball from the outfield and tried to swoop down, get it, and quickly come back up with it for the throw. My lower back kinda twinged and it hasn’t been the same since. I’m very reluctant to try a chiropractor as my skeptic’s nature puts me at odds with their unscientific “healing,” so I’m going the massage route first. I figure if it doesn’t help my back, at least it should be pretty nice and relaxing.
You're not fat because you don't exercise enough.
And exercising more will not help you lose weight. At least, not very well. You’re fat because you have too much insulin. Insulin controls whether or not our body burns or stores calories. The more insulin you have, the more fat you’re going to store. And while exercise burns calories, if your insulin levels are high, your body will demand those calories back and make you hungry.
So how do you lower your insulin levels? Eat fewer carbs.
Restless Everything Syndrome
Some days I just have to move. Physically. I have to move so much that everything gets tight, especially in my lower stomach and lower back. Today is one of those days. I constantly feel like I need to stretch. I bounce my legs and they need to bounce faster I cannot physically vibrate them fast enough to feel relief in the muscles. I can’t stop moving my fingers. I’ve always been this way, but some days it seems to be worse than ever.
What the hell is wrong with me?
