Brain implants to control computers

Hey Hutch, your future is nearly here!

John is hungry

Chain of Fools.

Someone started at Windows 1.0 and upgraded through every major iteration of Windows, noting the effects.

So who're you rooting for?

The humans? Or our future robot overlord?

In all seriousness, the AI demonstration we’re about to see tonight is the single biggest leap in AI computing in history. That this computer can play on jeopardy means that we’re within reach of actually having Star Trek-style computers that we can actually just ask questions. No more Google keyword searches, just english questions like “Accounting for interest, what was two 1935 dollars worth in 2010 terms?” and “how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Toosie Pop?” (3, natch).

Huge. GO WATSON! Kick that mormon weirdo’s ass!

Install Mac OS X on any intel-based PC?

I’d be very intrigued if this can actually work.

Desktop Suggestions, Please

I want to get a new desktop. I want to play music on it. I want to play around with Blender again. I want to watch the occasional movie or TV show.

I need it for writing. I might want to do some layout work.

Oh, yeah, and I probably want to play some games.

I’ll be doing some research anyway but I thought I’d see if anyone here has a suggestion.

Ars Technica's massively detailed review of the new Apple OS, Snow Leopard.

A lot of it is super high-level tech stuff you can skip, but the gist is all good news. It’s faster, leaner, and a great step forward for $30.

Get a brand new Mac OS X laptop for $400. Sort of.

John is hungry

I just bought 2 gigs of RAM for $20

To put that in perspective, about two year ago that would have cost me $300 or so. Why so cheap? Microsoft screwed the RAM makers. Apparently they all expected everyone to upgrade their RAM with Vista and overproduced. Vista bombed. Now there’s a ton of cheap RAM out there.

Head to http://www.crucial.com and run their system scanner to see if you could use an upgrade. Short of installing a whole new processor, increasing your RAM is the quickest and easiest way to dramatically improve your system’s speed.

Need some computer help

I encountered a website that contained some Trojans that my McAfee took care of, but I’m still getting pop up windows while searching the Internet, something that has not happened before. And my web speed is significantly slower than before. Seeing as how I believe everyone here is infinitely more computer literate than I am, I come to you for advice.

Masters In Education

While teaching for the next two years, I’ll be attending Seton Hall one weekend a month for a degree and certification in teaching. This weekend marks the start of that program. The class is called Becoming a Teacher II: Technology.

Anyway, I swear to you my professor just asked, “Now, what does the right button of the mouse do?”

Julia has overdosed on nerds

I've got a question for all of you!

Does anyone know how to convert a Sony Vegas file into a Flash file?

I think there are free Flash converters online, so any advice as far as how to go about it, and which converter to use will help!

Thanks

B is for Blog

So as some of you know I’ve had a Livejournal for a while, and recently it’s been getting quite a bit of attention around the interwebs. I think the time has come that I have outgrown my little blog, and I’d like to start my own site, namely one in which I can display ads that will get me some sweet moola.

Problem is, I am totally clueless as to how any of this works. I know a lot of you guys have been running your own site since back in ’Nam, so what better group to ask about this?

Help with Powerpoint.

Is anyone here really good with Powerpoint? I’m updating my office’s organization chart, and I want to make it so that when you mouse over a person’s name on the chart a little box (like a tip box) pops up over their name with additional information about them. There doesn’t seem to be an option for this in the “Action Settings” dialog box. I’m using PP 2003 if that matters. Thanks.

PC Game Recommendations

I just built a new computer this week, with a Core 2 Duo E6550 (2.33GHz, 1333MHz FSB) CPU and a GeForce 8600GT video card with 512MB RAM, so it’s plenty capable.

I haven’t really paid attention to the PC gaming scene in the past few years, mainly because my last computer was pretty old and not capable of running games very well.

So I ask… what PC games are out there that are worth playing? Probably some of the older games (the “classics” if you will) out there, the ones that aren’t $49.99 anymore, would be preferred.

I already bought the Orange Box, and while Portal’s the only game on it that I’ve played so far, it’s one of the best puzzle games that I’ve ever played and I definitely recommend it.

But I need more!

New Job

I’m sitting at my desk in my office on day 2 of work at GameServers.com. I share the office, but it’s an office anyway!

The digs are cool. I have a corner desk and a dry erase board. The machine is a brand new Dell. I took it out of its gigantic box myself. Here are the specs:

About The Scrabbled

The Scrabbled is a group of people blogging about and linking to all manner of things. Usually we argue and make fun of each other. Everybody knows everybody through somebody so there are no strangers here. Most of us have even met in real life! If you happen to personally know someone here and would like to start arguing with and/or making fun of someone, shoot John an email and ask to sign up. Otherwise, you're just going to have to read in relative silence. Sorry.
