Ruhlman's Twenty: 20 Techniques 100 Recipes A Cook's Manifesto
Has possibly replaced the Joy of Cooking as the most essential cookbook for every kitchen. I’m about halfway through it now and I’m already convinced of how useful a cookbook it is. Not just some great recipes, but some really essential information that isn’t solely intended for weekend feasts, but actual weekday cooking for working people.
How to download books: a step by step guide on using torrents.
I own a lot of books, but most aren’t readable on my iPad. Now they are.
I'm thinking of buying a Kindle
I have $250 in Amazon (or other places, but that seems the best place) gift certificates to burn and nothing I really want, so I’m thinking of doing it, anyone have one who can influence me either way?
Thirty Books
Time’s running out.. I’m guessing there might be 1 or 2 on this list you 29 yr olds haven’t read.
Biblioklept.
An awesome literary blog I just found. Anyone even remotely into reading should check it out.
Classic American Dishes
When I first started getting into cooking, I sought out all sorts of inventive or ambitious recipes; crudo with radish matchsticks or mint-crusted roast leg of lamb, finicky seared lobster dishes or ginger-glazed honey salmon. But I’ve recently gotten the impression that maybe there’s a giant hole in my cooking knowledge: the classics.
An NPR discussion on the "writing style" of Twilight.
Surprisingly hilarious. There was lolling involved.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
I thought I remembered talking about this book, but a quick DB search didn’t turn anything up. I started reading it last night and I couldn’t put it down. Is anyone else reading or has anyone else read this? I’m going to want to talk about it quite a bit. I’m maybe about 50 pages in — they’re still in the mountains. So don’t give anything away yet.
Movies wherein the book was NOT better than the movie
List them.
Inspired by Christina’s comment on the Jesse James movie thread. I can only think of one and some may not agree: Fight Club. The movie was much better than the book with a considerably more satisfying ending.
Are there any others?
Camping. And questions.
I. love. camping. I love it. It completely recharges me more than just about any vacation. It’s the complete disconnection from technology and the world, really, for an extended period of time. A hike is nice n’ all, but I still find myself anxious. It takes a day or so for the new-world anxiety to leave my bones and I can really relax and “commune with nature” and whatnot.
So Gos and I are going camping this week. We leave tomorrow to head to a little private campground in the pine barrens. It’s nothing hardcore and they have bathrooms n’ all, but it’s just getting to hang out in the woods and cook food over an open flame and read a shit ton and maybe do some canoeing.
But enough about me. Let’s talk about you. Read more for two questions for The Scrabbled at large.
Kanye West does not like or read books, but he has written one anyway.
It’s 52 pages long, some of which are blank pages, consisting of little witticisms and advice. I hate Kanye West.
Ratio: The Simple Codes Behind the Craft of Everyday Cooking.
Michael Ruhlman has a new book and it’s about the place where math and food meet. In other words, he wrote it especially for me.
2009 James Beard award finalists.
Yet another reason I need to check out Zahav. Any of your North Jersey folks been to Cucharamama?
The Graphic Novel
So, admittedly, I am in a slight graphic novel phase (or craze maybe). I just bought Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid On Earth by Chris Ware.
Watchmen
who here has read it? if so, did you enjoy it? i just finished and though i will read it again at some point to understand the more underlying story connections, i was disappointed.
the characters were never fully-developed, most were whiny and self-important, and it all ended…(spoiler)
New York City Bike Tour
Tomorrow I’m taking the entire day to cycle through the city (mainly below 34 St.) and tour some stores I’ve heard about. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a shopping spree exactly, just a nice way to tour the city with landmarks.
I plan on posting about my discoveries/opinions later on.
List of stores after the jump…
