I’m going to make a mix CD soon, for no particular reason really, but for myself. I just want it to be high energy. There are a few bands from 2008 that fall under that category and it’s what got me thinking.

So far: Marnie Stern, Ponytail, Soil & “Pimp” Sessions, Lightning Bolt.

Thought this would be a nice thing to discuss. I’m just looking for something fast and steady and wild. Try your best to avoid any hardcore because I really don’t like that genre too much. I’m sure I’ll think of more myself when I get home and scan my library.

Tuesday night when I was leaving work shortly before midnight I noticed was the first truly winterish night (in the city anyways).

I was listening to Joanna Newsom’s “Sawdust and Diamonds” on the way home and it fit the feeling of the night perfectly.

NPR has a very entertaining article on a new character archetype, the manic pixie dream girl, “that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.”

The article cites some of the obvious ones (Garden State), but misses others (Amelie) in favor of more controversial and conversation-inducing picks (Breakfast at Tiffanies). So this is a call. Make a list!

Okay, so occasionally, in the middle school, my students are maniacs. Naturally, I don’t want to just punish the bad behavior, but allow the good students to stand out.

Ever hear that quote “talking about music is like dancing about architecture?” I think Steve Martin said it. Well, when Tom Waits talks about his top 20 albums, it’s like watching a 5-part interpretive dance cycle about Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s absolutely beautiful. Case in point (about Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica):
