If anything I would think Metallica despite being douches, would be aware enough of how big a trainwreck it was. If for no other reason than I’m sure they’re concerned about their “coolness” and image and what have you. So I can kind of see them realizing it but just not wanting to say anything.
Of course then I heard the part where James Hetfield starts yelling “I am the table!!!” and realize that they may have been just as delusional.
It’s like Metallica got together and wrote some songs and then sent the tapes over to Lou Reed. I doubt there was any thought put into what makes our music work, what makes his music work and how can we merge these two things. Ideally, Metallica should have just taken the role of a session band for Lou Reed.
Does anyone know who produced the album? I’d like to know if there was a third party in there offering any suggestions.
A Rollingstone review in which they make at least one accurate statement. In reference to Lou Reed’s vocals: “He’s still preferable to the Cookie Monster vomit that passes for vocals on many metal records”

Lars on Lulu:
“In 1984, when hard-core Metallica fans heard acoustic guitars on ‘Fade to Black,’ there was a nuclear meltdown in the heavy-metal community. There have been many more since then. This is something they’ve never heard. Nobody hears rhythms or delivers poetry the way Lou does. It’s not for everyone, but I think it’s a fantastic record.”
