John is hungry

Radiohead - Staircase.

A new track, played live in Nigel Goldrich’s basement. Very very cool.

With this and These Are my Twisted Words, it’s like they’re hinting at some darker, almost 80’s-era gothier side of Radiohead that we haven’t seen yet. It’s what I was really hoping for with King of Limbs and, while I enjoyed it, it’s not what I was hoping for.

ha. that’s exactly what I was thinking when the announced the album. I don’t know when this was written but it’s a shame it didn’t make it on the last album. definitely cool.

Seriously, why could this have not been on King of Limbs. And why couldn’t King of Limbs had more songs like this. Mostly because it’s an actual song and not what feels like sketches of songs dragged out to song length like KOL does.

Well, maybe in 2 years we’ll get an album of this type of stuff, which I will enjoy greatly.

I really don’t get it. The other two songs left off of king of limbs are great, too:

Not as great as Staircase and These are My Twisted Words, but certainly album-worthy. It’s like they’re too in love with the LP-length 8-10 track album.

No, if they were in love with the LP length 8-10 track album then they would have put out a better one than King of Limbs was. It seems more like they just need a better producer to tell them what’s good and what’s less good. I’m sure they’re just so used to getting smoke blown up their collective asses with people telling them everything they do is nothing less than pure genius so it makes it hard to figure out what stuff is actually better than others.

At this point, though, Nigel Goldrich is as much a part of the band as Thom Yorke. He’s practically a co-writer on every one of their songs. Perhaps if they just went and added him as an official 6th member, and then got another actual producer.

Yeah, something. I don’t know. I mean they just need someone to reign in their more indulgent tendencies. Someone did it on In Rainbows and Hail To The Thief. But whoever it was, was just absent in this one if they left these songs off and included some of the ones that they did put on there.

Just curious — which do songs do you think are too indulgent on the new one? Cause what’s interesting to me is that everyone thinks some songs are boring on it, but opinions seem completely split about which.

I think all of them are somewhat indulgent, even the ones I like (Lotus Flower, Seperator, Morning Mr. Magpie). Most of them are just the same beat/note/sequence/whatever repeated for several minutes. Which is fine on an ambient record, or even for a Radiohead single or a couple of songs on every album. But they usually mix it up with a few more organic sounding songs or some songs with a few more dynamic flourishes in them.
