Bioluminescent Bay in Vieques Puerto Rico

I’d highly recommend this to anyone planning a trip down to Caribbean. It was probably the most amazing natural experience I’ve ever had.

Mosquito Bay in Vieques has one of the highest concentrations of bioluminescent plankton in the world and is one of the few places you can legally swim. Absolutely mindblowing, like swimming in a sea of blue fire.

The island is beautiful and almost completely untouched from development too since the U.S. military base there only closed a few years back. Cheap too.

Pictures are difficult because it’s dark, but there’s a few on this shitty website:

That looks incredible. I am obscenely jealous.

Where did you stay? Did you book through orbitz or one of those?

We stayed in a guest house called the Esperanza Inn, which was fantastic. Big bedroom, living room and full kitchen for 89 bucks a night — plus a large common area/backyard etc.

I don’t think most of the guesthouses are on the big booking sites. There’s only one proper hotel on the island, the W, and it’s probably very expensive (and from what we heard, shitty) I think we started here and checked around.
