EDIT: Actually, I forgot about “Ils.” That was tremendously solid. Just afraid that “High Tension” was so god-awful and overrated that it’s made me suspicious of French horror films forever.
Agreed. I still need to see Frontier(s) and one other one. But High Tension was totally overrated. From the ones I’ve seen there seem to be one or two moderately shocking or cool scenes and then a lot of padding and dreck.
I still can’t bring myself to watch Irreversible.
I think the difference between Argento and some of these newer Euro horror films is that horror films in general nowadays tend to be much more nihilistic and sadistic. I mean obviously there’s a good deal of sadism in any horror movie, but when there’s a modicum of supernatural elements that kind of eases it a bit. But a lot of these European/Japanese horror movies are just pure sadism with little of the style or very subtle humor of some of the older genre films.
