Way way back in the pine barrens, there’s a crashed plane and a weird memorial to the pilot that crashed there. You’re literally on a dirt road for something like 45 minutes in the middle of nowhere, then you jus find a clearing. Nick and I went there (with Rod? Jeff?)
There’s also Scary Land or whatever people call it — an abandoned residential complex.
I wish I remembered where either of these places are.
I’ve been to some weird Roman ruins in backwater English towns that felt like Papa Lazarou was gonna come out & attack.
There is/was an old abandoned gym in the YWHA on Broad & Pine that UArts owns which looks like people just stopped using it one day. Personal effects still locked in lockers, cigarette butts by weight machines and a couch in an empty pool. Paint peeling off everywhere. Really strange, but I got some cool video footage. No idea if it’s been cleaned up, but this was over 10 years ago & I assume it has.
John, are you talking about the abandoned houses across from Ancora where everyone went in high school to scare the crap out of themselves?
I’ve been to the Corn Palace, the John Brown Wax Museum and I spent a year living in Patagonia which looks a lot like the picture and is weirdly beautiful and extremely isolated. Like three hours by bus to a real hospital isolating, so you are always concerned about the consequences of getting hit by a car or having your appendix burst.

I’m sure I’ve been to others more interesting, but recently — Greek’s Playland and Stone Museum in Monroe, NJ.
It’s an amusement park designed for handicapped kids built by this crazy old man from all sorts of recycled material (he used an old gas tank to make what he calls the world’s largest clown). It’s kind of horrifying but when you meet “the Greek,” the dude who made it, it’s endearing.
And of course, attached to it is the Stone Museum…which is, as it sounds, a museum about stone. wtf?
Here’s something I wrote about it recently.

The scary town was up near Perth Amboy, just off of route 9. Remember when we were there and another car pulled in? I think I was in the E-van with Jeff. I remember one of us turning the headlights on and the other car peeling out and flooring it in the opposite direction.
I broke into this place a bunch of times during my freshman and sophomore years of college. It was similar to how Mandy describes the abandoned gym. . . except it was a prison. Lots of peeling (presumably lead) paint and scattered belongings in a lot of the cells. Definitely creepy.
I have also been to the Longaberger basket building, because my aunt lives near there, and she thought I would think it was funny. It is.
Um, I’ve been to a number of weird and scary places, but the weirdest place I have ever been remains BON BON LAND. I doubt it counts because it’s in Denmark. Here are some pictures.
Lotsa places!
Ringing rock
smacking rocks with hammers makes pretty noises)
World’s largest chest of drawers
Steel dinosaurs in my hometown
World’s largest apple (which was actually not that big
World’s largest highboy dresser
My friends and I searched long and hard (heh) for the world’s largest milk carton but it had been torn down
