" In my experience, heirloom tomatoes are very, very often inferior in taste and texture."
THANK YOU, JEFFERY. I’m tired of people raving about goddam heirloom tomatoes. All’s I want is a good Roma and a good Jersey beefsteak. I’d say a three out of every four heirlooms I’ve had have been too tart, too bitter, or taste like trash. And I don’t mean like “that’s a garbage piece of tomato” I mean it tastes like a dumpster. And that’s totally fine! “Heirloom” describes basically every other kind of tomato ever. So of course they can’t all be good. Or even most. But I’m tired of people automatically assuming that heirloom == good.
it’s another buzz word in the food world. like organic. or gluten-free. or local. or farm to table. it’s bullshit. although, i do like that older varieties are being grown again, whether it’s tomatoes or carrots or whatever. but it’s all relative to how they are grown and if they were any good to begin with.
i like brandywines. i’d recommend them.
