John is hungry

Matthew Dear - Black City

Tonight was a catch-up-on-music night. Run through all the blogs, check some relevant labels, read through reddit’s listentothis and music subreddits, download anything that sounds interesting. And oh my god did I find something interesting.

Black City has floored in a rare way; the sort of album that I immediately like and with each new track, I find myself laughing at how goddam cool it is. The album is dark. Like, seriously dark. It sounds like if Justice or The Knife remixing the brooding Side B of Talking Heads’ Remain in Light. Perhaps a bit too much like Remain in Light — it’s not just hints I’m hearing of “Listening Wind,” “The Overlord,” or “Houses in Motion,” it sounds like he’s outright quoting them (and that’s a-ok with me). Just… more danceable and fun.

Totally one of my favorite albums of the year so far. You know where to grab it.

I knew within 14 seconds of the first track that I would enjoy this. Looking forward to the rest.

Right?! I was just kinda skipping through album after album after album and, just like you said, seconds into this one I was totally on board.

Favorite track at the moment is definitely “You Put a Smell On Me” — it almost sounds like something we’d have heard at Shampoo on wednesdays (goth night), but not as silly.

I was doing some Illustrator practice while listening, but that track, “You Put A Smell On Me” caught my ear, as did the next track. I like the percussion sounds he went with.

Wisdom

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics.
