Portland Maine
The family I cook for took a vacation this week and gave me no notice, which means I have the entire week off…
Anyway, we’re going to take a last minute trip to Portland and are just wondering if anyone has been there or knows anything about the city… food, arts, etc. Best lobster roll maybe??

I went there as part of a work trip once. The place is really quaint and the waterfront has a very “olde towne” feel to it with tons of places to eat/drink.
That said, be wary of the street toughs. A couple of friends and I were accosted by some dudes with a baseball bat on our way back to our hotel one night. No one was hurt, but I definitely found it odd given where we were.

Blue-collar New England townies are some of the most violent and crass people I’ve ever had the displeasure to come across. They’re extremely territorial and have quite a bit of disdain for outsiders.
I guess when you paint houses for a living and have nothing but Bud Light drafts to look forward to, you’d be pretty pissed off most of the time. Or drunk. Or both.
YES! You should absolutely go here: www.forestreet.biz
The service was some of the best I’ve ever had, the menu changes weekly depending on what’s in season and what’s freshest.
Also, even though the scallops gave my then-boyfriend gout, they were dynamite. And I don’t even like seafood.
Make reservations!
Also, go here: www.portlandheadlight.com. Because it’s pretty.
Yeah, it can get rough up there. I’ve got a friend who was born and raised in Portland, and for years he worked for the Casco Bay Ferry. Imagine getting up at 4 AM and spending the wee hours of their frigid mornings on a boat. I can see where their agression comes from.
That being said, pretty much every place I’ve been to around there has been a dive bar. There’s an abundance of them there.
Allagash Brewing co. is there, though. That’s always a fun trip.
Thanks for the suggestions. We had dinner at Hugo’s which is the only restaurant I knew about in advance and good god was it phenomenal! Everything was so well-balanced and interesting. Beef Heart Reuben!
We had butter-based lobster rolls yesterday. Tomorrow we’re getting mayo-based rolls.
And the people are not very nice. I guess it’s still the fucking northeast.
