Dunkin Donuts
So last night a friend of mine bought a dozen dunkin donuts for everyone to share. Now I usually don’t eat crap like that, so I politely said “no thanks” and carried on in my conversation. However, when I woke up this morning there were a couple left. I thought "well, I’m not going to be able to eat the whole thing, so I’ll just try a piece and see what I’ve been missing. Turns out I was missing overly sweetened fake sugar smeared on buttery sugar that surrounds a layer of creamy buttery sugar.
Now I hate myself.

just thinking about that makes my stomach burn. not in a good way.
In the cafeteria line at work I watched a pregnant co-worker buy a glazed one for breakfast the other day. Ok, I can understand cravings, but THAT is what you are going to give your baby? Seriously, there was nothing else around? The fruit bar didn’t look like it would do the trick?
Ugh.
I honestly can’t say I’ve ever had a donut I was happy about eating. Not just because of how horrible they are for you. I mean, I have no guilt or problem throwing down ice cream or cannoli. But donuts are just so sickeningly sweet, I can’t handle them. It’s like eating spoonfuls of sugar.
I always see or read about these special handmade donut shops all over the country and they really look like a completely different food item. Bigger, thicker, more like cake or a bagel. And while I’m not especially a fan of cakes or bagels either, I’d still love to try one of these so-called artisan varieties. Anyone know of any in the Jersey/Philly area? Say “the Krispy Kreme” factor and I’m going to stab you in the eye with an insulin needle.
I know of a decent donut shop or two in NYC, but that doesn’t help ya’ll. The best donut I have ever had, though, was during a trip to San Francisco earlier this year.

Hutch, mouse over the third one from the left in the top row and think about how happy you would be after eating that thing. It took me three separate trips over three days to finally be able to snag one but it was totally worth it. I’m pretty sure I posted about it here.
Oh, and as far as D&D is concerned, I am definitely a sucker for their iced coffee. I make it myself from D&D grounds though, which I am sure is something that will be scoffed at ’round here.
I think he’s assuming that since he’s using Dunkin’ Donuts coffee (huge mega-corporation coffee) and not some Fair Trade brand he’d get scoffed at.
If you’re near the Audubon area you can stop in at The Treehouse on Merchant street. I haven’t tried much there, been drinking Iced Latte’s during this recent heat wave, but it’s a nice local spot.

This. I’m sure the coffee would taste a lot better if I grew the beans in my backyard and ground them with a machine that I built in my basement metal shop.
Dunkin Donuts probably kicked ass before our time. The way Denis Leary talks about it on Lock ‘N Load sounds like it did. Now it’s just a bunch of youknows, running shit sloppily. No DD has ever impressed me in any way, shape or form.
Yet, they seem to be on a lot of corners and I seem to need a coffee, coolatta, iced coffee or whatever some mornings. However… I’ve not been since a couple weeks ago when I noticed a generous segment of wrapper hiding in the cream cheese on my bagel. Much like a bad sushi experience, I’m probably not going back. Plus, they don’t usually take their own coupons – never has ‘prices and participation may vary’ meant so much.

My Dad has always said that Dunkin Donuts is the best coffee. Now, he drinks instant Maxwell House so I’m not sure that he’s so much the connoisseur. But yeah, back in the day it was supposed to be awesome.
Personally I like their iced coffee and regular coffee and have never had a big problem with service. Wawa’s coffee is the best, imo. Starbucks can go to hell…they taste like burning.
Speaking of Starbucks and Denis Leary, a quote from his book always repeats in my head when I see someone with a gigantic frappucino: “ice cream disguised as coffee.” So very, very true.

I’m all like: Nom Nom Nom
- Donuts are great. Period.
- Dunkin Donuts was indeed great but they’ve gone downhill over the past 10 years or so in general, both in terms of donuts and their coffee which used to be phenomenal. To Jay’s point the beans/grounds are still good if you make it at home, but when made in the shop itself, definitely not.
- My massive weight gain circa 2001 was roughly 20-25 lbs. in one year, thanks in no small part to getting up at 4:30 every morning to drive into NYC for work and the only place to stop before the highways was a Dunkin Donuts. Probably almost every day for a year I ate at least 1 donut.

Heidi said:I love donuts. My problem isn’t how sweet they are, it’s how I can eat one in under 15 seconds and not even remember it. They don’t fill me up so I need to eat about six to start feeling full (and sick).

I like these two things the most from this post. You’re all a bunch of hateful, life-hating haters. And pricks. Definitely that.
