Emeralds
Emeralds is a noise band. A gorgeous noise band. And I don’t mean to say that the dudes in the band are particularly attractive, though I’m sure they’re all quite fetching in their own way. No, Emeralds creates beautifully noisy electronic soundscapes that are just the best goddam thing in the world to sit and relax, work, read, or flat-out lay the floor with a pair of headphones and listen to.
(Ok, “the best” is probably a bit much, but it’s really good stuff.)
My friend and neighbor, Mike, has a crazy impressive record collection (at least, impressive to people who have used the words “beautiful” and “noise” in the same sentence) leant me all their albums and I’ve been listening to them pretty much non-stop all week. I’m always surprised by The Scrab’s music tastes in that everyone seems totally open to particularly “non-musical” so I thought maybe you folks might want to give this a shot.
I will say that the most recent album, Does it Look Like I’m Here?, which Pitchfork has been flipping out about, is not totally reflective of the rest of their stuff. It’s a bit more Boards of Canada-y 70’s synth stuff, which is wholly enjoyable and kudos to Pitchfork for hyping it, but their earlier stuff is far more drone oriented, God-Moving-Over-the-Face-of-the-Water type stuff so don’t disservice yourself by judging them solely on one period.
You know where to find it.
