I just finished Donnie Brasco, so I’ll start with that.
sorry, let me rephrase my post. looking for something new, something you stumbled upon, gave it a shot, and it turned out to be good.
Oooooo good topic. Um, a few good ones I watched recently:
- Moon (seriously fantastic movie — best Sci Fi released since 2001 or Blade Runner)
- A Scanner Darkly (speaking of Blade Runner…)
- The Third Man (Orson Wells at his near-best)
- Brick (took me a good 20 minutes to get used to, but I ended up loving it. Gritty film noir… but… in high school. weird, but awesome)
- Cosmos (Carl Sagan’s love letter to science — all episodes!)
- The Tick (the original live-action series. truly criminal that it got cancelled.)
- I Vitelloni (Fellini just before he started getting more surrealist).
Conference calls. more later.
Pin – weird-ass, psychotic horror movie
Cocaine Cowboys 1 & 2 – Documentaries about the South American-led drug trade in the U.S.
Altered – Another horror movie with aliens and backwoods folk. It’s not sci-fi. It’s actually really good. I’d file it under pleasantly surprising.
Santa’s Slay, if you’re into washed-up wrestlers & holiday films. Antichrist, if you’re into Willem Dafoe’s balls.
Whoah, Antichrist is on instant-play? Ima have to catch that soon.
not movies but you van get all Blackadder and Red Dwarf seasons – you should be be able to miss the first season of the first, not that good.
I could be misreading him, but I can’t imagine L’Kevin liking Red Dwarf. On that same token, I can’t imagine him not liking Blackadder. Really, though, British comedy seems a polarizing genre, so it’s hard to say one way or the other.
I have another conference call in 10 minutes. In this time I will write a second list of shit worth watching that you probably maybe haven’t heard of:
Bronson
Dude goes to jail, decides to become famous for being the most violent criminal of all time. Worth watching just for the cinematography and incredible directing style.
Kurasawa’s Dreams
Akira Kurasawa’s last flick — a series of Japanese folk tales on-screen. Gorgeous and hypnotizing.
Tetsuo the Iron Man
Talked about this briefly on here before. Dude starts becoming a machine. Fights other machine dude. It’s super abstract and pretty short (like, 40 minutes?) with little dialogue and an incredible early-industrial soundtrack. Worth it for the drill-penis death alone.
Chop Shop and Man Push Cart
Two flicks by someone Ebert thinks is the next truly great director. Sort of harkens back to italian realism, but gives you a pretty amazingly glimpse into a third world right here on a home soil that we rarely if ever get to see.
has anyone seen the documentary “modify?” it’s streaming on netflix and i think it’s from a few years ago but holy hell it’s straight up gore.
i am proud to say i watched every second of it and dave had to turn his head at many parts.
Everyone should watch the last 10 minutes of “Beware! Children At Play,” but ONLY the last 10 minutes. Do it now.
Also some Fellini movie or something.
