Milk: The Liquid

Let’s talk about milk. I’ve been a big fan of whole milk for a long time. I like waking up in the middle of the night and pouring out a big old glass of milk. I usually drink it in one gulp and it’s very fulfilling.

Anyway, I’ve been going the skim milk route for about 2 years now. Occasionally, I’ll go back to the old favorite. This is what brought me to post about milk.

I just had a cold glass of whole milk. It tasted like heavy cream (after my skim-conversion). Here’s the catch though: I liked it.

What are your thoughts on milk?

Drinking milk just seems wholly revolting to me. I"ll have, at most a cup (as in the measurement) with oreos.

My family and I are huge milk drinkers, mostly because my dad used to be a dairy farmer and drink the stuff right from the udder or something. We used to have milk with every meal and dessert (of course).

My extended family and parents stayed at a little ocean inn for a week and by the end of the vacation, the waiter knew to bring pitchers of milk to avoid having to make multiple trips.

That being said, my brother and sister-in-law aren’t huge fans because of all the hormones and junk. So they fill their kids’ cups with water instead. Strangely enough…my five-year-old nephew has had 2 root canals and I wonder if milk would’ve prevented that.

I poured a bowl of cereal last night, but when I went to pour the milk, there was only a little bit, nowhere near enough to properly enjoy my Cheerios. I think I would have rather been kicked in the nuts.

I like milk.

my friend karl, who some of you know, buys a half gallon of milk to just drink as his beverage.

he’ll stop at wawa and get some snacks, maybe a sandwich, and a half gallon of whole milk.

If health wasn’t an issue, I’d go whole milk without hesitating. Milk is supposed to be kinda thick and hearty, and I often think about how much different and better milk from the milkman in the 50s probably tasted than the engineered stuff we have today.

That said, I find 2% to be a good balance. 1% is too thin and unsatisfying, and skim milk is just a disgusting, awful concoction.

I like ice cream and cheese, and dunking cookies and sometimes adding milk to sugary cereal but straight milk as a beverage, no thanks.
If I had kids I don’t think I would give them milk unless I knew the cow it came from. Raw milk or nothing.

I’m firmly in the camp of milk only as an additive (to coffee, to cereal, etc.) and never as a drink. Even as a kid I couldn’t get down with that.

And now when I do use milk for any of the aforementioned purposes I only use skim for my cereal because whole is too heavy and for my coffee my preference is cream or half and half.

I don’t like milk because it doesn’t like me. I’m lactose intolerant. Once I found out about it in 7th grade I stopped eating real ice cream in favor of frozen yogurt, and noticed quickly how heavy real ice cream seemed. I never really liked cereal with milk and I definitely didn’t drink milk as a drink.

If I want cereal, a rare occurance for me, I use soy milk. For coffee I use cream but prefer the flavored nondairy creamer stuff.

kev & i go through 2-3 gallons of 1% a week and he actually never drank it straight until he lived with me. over about 20 years growing up, my family drank so much milk that we went from Whole down to 2% and now down to 1%, but not sure i’ll ever get into Skim.

i have never broken a bone and certainly had moments in my life where i should have – i think credit is due to my excessive milk & dairy intake.

I’ve never really minded milk as a beverage – we always drank [whole] milk with dinner when I was a kid – but I stopped drinking it years ago out of laziness/not being able to finish a whole thing of it before it went bad. Now I can’t drink more than say 6oz without getting a terrible stomachache.

I put half & half in my coffee and try out all the milk substitutes with my cookies (almond milk is my current preference).

It just hit me that this thread is titled “Milk: The Liquid”. Was this because Paris thought we would confuse it with something else?

The Botino’s in Washington twp. has an awesome ultra-pasteurized skim milk that’s think and hearty like whole milk. It’s the best skim milk I’ve ever had. I forget the name of it, but it comes in a purple and white, half-gallon carton.

I consume 3 scoops of whey protein (solid milk!) after every workout.

Sometimes, I mix said whey protein IN MILK, leveling it up to shake ultimate.

1% 2% and skim milk are useless, disgusting products. the problem is that the milk fat isn’t merely removed. they try to keep some of the body and smell in it or else it really would be nothing but water. so where does it come from? additives and powdered milk. which is oxidized cholesterol. and removing the fat makes it impossible for your body to digest and absorb any of milks beneficial vitamins.

so if you’re gonna drink milk, drink the real thing.

or do whatever you want. i don’t really care about any of you

I guess I added the “The Liquid” part because the title looked very plain as just “Milk”.

But the name of the film did cross my mind.

Also, for all your lactose intolerant people: drink raw milk. It will actually (temporarily) cure your intolerance by restoring the enzymes your guts are lacking. Yes — raw milk comes with it’s own enzymes that help digest itself. Lactose intolerance is a side-effect of pasteurization (particularly high-pasteurization. Some people can get by with low pasteurization).

Raw milk is the way to go. Is it legal to buy in New Jersey? If not, take a trip to the Fair Food Farmstand at the Reading Terminal Market to stock up!

I believe it’s legal, but only sold direct from farms. We’ve gotten raw milk from reading, though, and it’s good stuff.
