Five Fingers Shoes
I saw a guy at the gym wearing these strange little shoes and wondered what the hell they were. Then…I see Jorge Garcia wearing them in pics from his personal blog. Any Scrabblers own these? I have a hard time believing these are great for running as they seem to lack arch support.

Vibrams, right? I had a chat with my friend, DePalma, about these. He told me all about how normal sneakers make us run unnaturally, and that the Vibrams corrected that.
He said after one week of running, he could barely walk. His calves were getting especially worked, but now that’s healed and he loves ’em.
I tried his on and found them to be very comfortable. I took a quick run and felt light on my feet, but can’t attest to their full effect without putting more miles in.
I do know that the Nikes I bought for running had a direct effect on my right knee. I slightly injured the knee years ago, but never had a problem jogging until a few weeks into a new regimen with those Nikes.
I am still considering getting the Vibrams. (They are great as water shoes, and further, triathlon shoes)
Are those the ones that approximate running in bare feet? I’ve read a few articles about how much better that is for you as a work out and orthopedically. Not that I’d ever try it/them, but still at least there’s a reasoning behind the ugliness, which is more than I can say for most modern footwear.

Sent this to Jay about a week ago: Barefoot Running: How Humans Ran Comfortably and Safely Before the Invention of Shoes
This pretty much explains DePalma’s experience.
I’ve seen these at my gym too—they look so weird. There is a lot out there about barefoot running but despite the running injuries I’ve had I don’t feel like that is going to be my miracle cure. With my luck I’ll step on a piece of glass, get an infection and die.
Ok, that might be a little extreme…I just don’t like the feeling of stuff between my toes.
