Philly Union home opener meetup?
I’ll be in philly at a Web Standards Org meetup at 4pm. I believe the game is at 6pm. Anyone want to meet at a center-city-ish pub someplace?

Yep. caught the last half after our meetup. That last goal was pretty awesome. I think two things really stand in the way of my total enjoyment of the game, though: familiarity with the players, and familiarity with the game. The former will certain come with just watching more games, but the latter I’m not so sure. I understand the rules and all, but not enough to tell the difference between a well executed corner kick and a not so good one. With baseball, I had my dad to sort of point out the finer things and now I can enjoy analyzing each pitch. I don’t have that with soccer. Not yet, anyhow.
cool, glad you got to watch some! even now, i’m still learning the game, but the more you watch the more you will be able to determine if a play was shit or not. however, if you want to learn the ‘finer things’ about football/soccer, you should watch more than just the MLS. that game was not much of a finer thing, especially that second DC United goal – ugh.

Your not going to get to know most MLS players because most of them stink. Watch the EPL…not only is the quality a million times better, but it’s pretty obvious who the best players are and why.
Bad play in the EPL is usually due to a lack of inventiveness and creativity, not a lack of skill.

we’ve tried this before, Trav. all of the games start too early for him to watch, even if prompting with beer and sexy Irish breakfast at pubs. :(
