I really do love this guy. Any time I see a movie I find even remotely worth thinking about, his blog is the first place I visit as he damn near always has an interesting take on it.
But man… that photo… eesh!
He did a Q+A on reddit a while ago where he talked at length about how he dealt with longing for the taste of things. He was apparently particularly obsessed with orange soda.
I’ve read Ebert for years, always loved his writing, but never saw his TV show once. It took a while before I noticed that something was wrong with him physically. I eventually started to notice that his reviews were almost endlessly positive and that he gave gleeful 4-star reviews to just about everything. Turns out he was just happy to be alive, and finding joy in the artform he loved the most.
It’s a great article, he’s a great writer of criticism.
Dude is just an awesome human. Not just a good writer but based off of everything I’ve read about him and also things he’s written on subjects other than movies.
That being said, one of my favorite books I used to have was an anthology of criticisms of movies he’s hated. Pretty much an anthology of the most notable reviews of movies that he gave one or less stars.

Best review ever.
