While I’m happy I bought some stock when it was $120 a share, I’m pissed I didn’t decide to double down when it dropped to $80 a share.

Yeah, but it’s still only going to go up so much more. It’s at record highs now. If it’s going to go up it’s more on anticipation than the actual reveal. Once details are let out there will be as much picking apart as there will anticipation. Right now it’s only speculation and that favors the company. Once it’s more than speculation there will be just as many naysayers to drive down the stock as anticipation to drive it up. I’m not saying it won’t get a bump but nowhere like where it was to where it is now.

Cramer has been pushing up the price target and recommending it incessantly. Though, if the past is any indicator, that would be a sign to dump it.

I gotta say, I’m not really a fan of Apple in general; I like the ipod and (for the most part) itunes, but I prefer windows on my computer. But Steve Jobs and his marketing team are geniuses. They’ve gotten to the point where tech reporters are eating out of there hands and effectively shilling for their products for just the chance to get an early glimpse and be the first to report (shill some more) about it. Even when what they release is nothing big (anything non 1st gen ipod, iphone, etc.) or a forgettable somewhat failure (Apple TV), people gush over it like its the second coming, idiots line up outside stores to be the first to get it (even though all past experience should tell them that waiting a few months will mean a better product at a much lower price), and all the analysts bust a nut about how great the company is.

The one drawback to the whole godlike status is that if they don’t live up to it, they are headed for a huge fall. One flop, mediocre product, or pr slip up and they’ve got problems.

In other Apple-related news, it’s Luna’s birthday tomorrow. Imagine having your birthday on the same day as an Apple press release!

Man, that’s gotta be Evan Worse than having your birthday the day after Christmas. Yuk yuk.

Wow, it,s like the iphone, but it fixed those annoying problems of being too small and making phone calls. And it’s also like a laptop, except without the annoyances of a lid to protect the screen and a design the facilitates ergonomic usage.

And I wonder if it comes with coupons for chiropractic treatment, since if you plan to type with 2 hands on it, you’ll be staring straight down.

And so much for the stock going up.

Yeah, everything is just so expected. I was really hoping they’d have something better than just a larger iphone without the phone. I guess i’d have to see it, use it and know what other apps are available for it before making up my mind.

I was more impressed with The Microsoft Courier

ok, so, my take? Yeah, there’s a lot here to be disappointed about. A lot of things felt missing or hacked together. No camera. “Pixel-doubling.” All those goddam context menus.

But I really, truly believe that this is the future of computing for the vast majority of users. Not this specific model, but this is where it’s going. The fact is, this is a no-training-needed device. This is something I can put in my grandmother’s or niece’s lap and they will begin using it. Just like the iPhone. You push on this icon and the device becomes a new device with new buttons and functions. App writers aren’t just writing little programs you run in a window alongside other programs that you interact with through the same articficial mouse/command platform. The app becomes the device and that’s what it is so long as your’e using that app. It’s a web browser, a book, a music player, any one of those things because the touch screen allows the device to behave in an entirely new way. Yes, perhaps it’s overly simple, but that criticism has been levied against every new technology iteration since we moved away from mainframes.

I’m not saying the traditional desktop is going to go away. There’s always going to be a need for them. I’m always going to need one. I do things that simply can’t be done on the one-app-right-now paradigm like run web servers and build web pages with multiple apps.

But for general use — for the casual computing things like browsing, emailing, video, music, reading, or writing, it just makes sense. It’s the “internet device” everyone kept trying to invent in the 90’s.

If it were more expensive, I might be forced to wait for a second or third iteration before buying one. But at that price, and considering the resale value of apple products, hell — this might be the first thing I get when I start getting a paycheck again.

O.K. why would someone get this rather than a laptop? I mean I get why an Iphone or an Ipod touch because you can fit that in your pocket. But if you need something bigger than that, why would you get this rather than a macbook which I’m assuming can do all the same things? Is it just a price point thing?

I agree. The more advanced stuff this thing is capable of doing is going to be annoying using a touch screen. You can get a pretty sweet laptop for $800.

Remember a couple of years ago when apple was crazy about including cameras in all of their devices? What happened to that? This device seems to be screaming for a front facing camera.

Also, why not wait and see what Google will release as a competitor?

Yeah, the whole netbook thing is a combination of price, size, and battery life. People want something that’s not as expensive, heavy, or bulky as a laptop just to get them online for general purpose things.

Yeah, I think they’re holding the camera just for a v2.0, which is totally shitty but makes good business sense.

As for Google, simply because they haven’t demonstrated to me that they’re capable of designing a decent OS. That, and the appstore.

Yeah, I understand the appeal of netbooks. But this just seems…..less appealing than a netbook. no keyboard….no cover for the screen, etc. Wouldn’t they have been better off coming out with a less cost prohibitive (but obviously also less extensively purposed) macbook?

On 01/27/10 at 05:19 PM, John is hungry was all:

The cover for the screen thing is BS. The glass they use is pretty phenomenally scratch-proof and my case-less, beaten up iPhone is proof of it. No good screen should need or have a screen guard and people who put big, clunky, ugly covers on their iphones drive me nuts.

The virtual keyboard definitely is something that I want to try out. It could suck or it could be surprisingly functional. Regardless, they have the keyboard dock, so that’s pretty rad.

I think they sort of tried what you suggested with the Air, but that didn’t go over so well. A lot of it has to do with hard drive space. You might see what you’re talking about in a few years as hardware becomes cheaper, but the $500 bundle of hardware would simply not be enough to for Snow Leopard.

Regardless, the idea is simply that of a device that changes depending on how you use it. Attaching a keyboard to it breaks the… whatever you call it. I can’t recall the word I’m looking for, but I think you get what I mean. A lot of the apps on that thing aren’t going to need a keyboard. I mean, hell, I can’t wait for the synth/groovebox apps that come out for that thing. I suppose you could have done one of those hinged tablets, where the keyboard folds under, but that’s just not very Apple.

Fact is, it’s not a laptop. It’s a… gadget. a multi gadget. It’s like a swiss army knife gadget. I think the argument to made isn’t whether or not it’s nullified by a cheaper laptop, but rather, by a slightly more powerful iphone. What is gained here other than screen size?

I don’t that this will be the future because of the whole easy to use/simplicity angle. Maybe you could put this in your grandmothers hands and she’d pick it up right away (I doubt it), but that doesn’t matter, because any non mentally challenged people who would require that level of simplicity will be gone soon. A few years from now, even the slack-jaw-est hillrat yokel you can find will be fully able to operate a standard desktop computer.

Unless of course we, as a whole, continue to combine our insatiable urge to have what’s shiny and new with our extreme mental and physical laziness. Then Apple should do just fine.

I think it comes down to this: if they had come up with an OS that actually sat somewhere in between the iphone and a laptop, I think this thing would be an overwhelming success. The OS, however, is the one major failure of the iPad. It’s lazy, on Apple’s part, and they really missed a chance to truly wow people by reinventing how we might interact with a more fully-featured OS without a mouse and hardware keyboard.

Yeah, I think between the fact that my household has an imac, at least 5 ipods (of varying working order), 2 iphones, 2 Apple TV’s, an airport extreme, and 3 base station means my credentials as an apple fan (or an idiot depending on your perspective) are not in question. And I still think this is a totally “meh” and mostly useless thing.

The only unequivically exciting things you’ve been able to say about it have to do with geekery and development platforms and potential rather than “This is a great idea right now and people will want this because……”.

And yeah, whether the screen cover thing is true or a perception, I can guarantee you it’s a perception that most people are going to have and it will make the reluctant to bother with i.

John, I think the word you’re looking for is “verisimilitude?”

The iPad isn’t impressive. Like everyone else I chalk up a lot of that to the iPhone OS, which is something that has limitation as the backbone of its very design document. If this was an inbetween step straddling a phone and a laptop, there would be a way to get your music and photos on it without connecting the damn thing to another computer. Can you imagine how mindblowing this thing would be if you could slide a DVD or a CD into it? Or plug your digital camera in and backup all your photos? As it stands now, the comfort and relaxation value that Jobs is trumpeting will all come grinding to a halt the second a user tries to fire up Hulu in bed and sees a bricked NOFLASH icon. This isn’t terribly surprising, so the designer in my blood was hoping that this thing would double as a tablet of sorts… but alas, a missed opportunity.

I’d be fascinated to hear about the development of this thing behind the scenes. Certainly more ambitious devices were proposed, maybe even a cheaper price point at the least, but all were scaled back to ensure that nothing steals the thunder away from other elements of their product line. The optics of the unveiling are that one can still buy an iPod without feeling that they’re missing out. Same with an iPhone. People willing to throw hundreds of dollars more at a Macbook will be comforted that they receive much, much more. I wonder how intentionally they hobbled the iPad to ensure their brand as a whole.

Neh, there’s a few select Apple-only apps that they let run in the background. iPod, Mail, Phone, and Safari are it, I think. Obviously no Phone on the iPad.

i just don’t see how this thing replaces an iphone and/or a laptop. like, why you would pay $500 to have this if you have both of those and your reasoning isn’t “i’m an apple gadget whore.”

i’ve used mac since 2002 and have had computers, laptops, ipods, etc but this thing doesn’t interest me. probably because i think e-readers are for yuppie bullshitters that don’t read novels and pretend to read the wsj.

Christina, you repeatedly surprise me with how shortsighted you are with regards to your own field. The one area the iPad is undeniably exciting is how it may save print media. Maybe not this device per se, but I really think it is to print media what the first iPod was to music. What NYTimes, Wired, and Sports Illustrated have already demoed is beyond comparison to anything going on right now. It invalidates the Kindle and the Nook. It’s something people would willingly pay for and use and offers the technology to have the paper “delivered” every day just as you would on your doorstep. As more papers head towards this sort of digital subscription model with all sorts of features that trump the traditional print medium, from embedded video in articles to content search/sorting, more devices are going to come out that work with it.

This is the intro to the device that’ll get grandad reading the paper online. It may not be the device, but keep in mind both the iPod and the iPhone took a few revisions to really take off.

john john john man i know what you’re saying dude. but the formula on “saving” the gloucester county times as opposed to saving the new york times is vastly different and has several years in between the two.

my current issue is appealing to the masses of gloucester county and the greater philadelphia region in an easier and friendlier way than buying a subscription to the newspaper. still, to this day, (and these numbers haven’t changed) our subscribers TREMENDOUSLY outweigh our online readers. we’re an old school county and it’s a slow transition to integrate more online applications to appeal to readers. it’s just not something easily handled with readers of my newspaper.

as far as other newspapers go and the print media in general, i see it. but we, a meager group of scrabblers originating from various towns of south jersey, are tackling the world now with discussion of the ipad?. we’re talking about a new gadget and its eventual integration into the world of communicae. and yes, this may be the future, but i gotta deal with what i got in front of me right now, which is an average age reader of 55.
