I was going to mention that book too. It was very interesting to read. Has anyone dabbled in any of the other books from that series?
I read the Slayer – Reign in Blood one and it was pretty good. Though, on the whole, I don’t think it was as interesting an album as NMH. Which isn’t to say it’s any better or worse. There’s just more, thematically speaking, to talk about on Aeroplane.
Most of the 33 1/3 books are like, “here is what the people were doing right before, during, and after the recording. I may have interviewed them a bit about what it all means, or I gathered a pile of magazine clippings and used those as reference material instead. Oh and here is my analysis of the lyrics, which would probably be better written had I any experience whatsoever in analyzing poetry (or a teenage boy’s notebook, in the case of Slayer). Then I will tell you to disregard my analysis because it is mine and not yours.”
Except John Darnielle wrote the one for Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality, and it does not follow that format. Instead it is a tiny novel. I own it and haven’t read it yet because I know it is going to be wrenching.
