I've been working on my favorite albums of the year AND decade.
Have you? I’m sticking with “favorite” and not “best” cause I don’t think any of us have listened to anywhere near enough music to say what the best is.

I’ve listened to a lot more albums a lot more thoroughly than I have in past years. But there’s been nothing that totally grabbed me and would not let go like there has been in the past years. Just off the top of my head from previous years, Cut Copy, Gaslight Anthem, Portishead, Band of Horses, Radiohead, The Knife, Interpol, Panda Bear…..all albums that I had to physically restrain myself from listening too because I became so obsessed with them. Nothing this year came even close to that. Passion Pit….maybe….The Big Pink…sort of. But nothing jumps out.
That was last year for me. This year is the opposite for me as it is for you, it seems.
Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, St. Vincent, Wild Beasts, Real Estate, The Marked Men, and Do Make Say Think all had albums I played the hell out of.
I’ve been thinking about it, sure sure.
Animal Collective is probably the one that came closest for me. I liked all the others but they totally blended into the woodwork after a little while.
I actually started to wonder what would be my albums of the noughties this very morning. Whether I will have a list together this year is a different kettle of fish.
I’ll do this after I stop flipping out that it’s been a decade since the year 2000. Holy shit.
I know some people who’ve been working on their decade lists since July.

Favorite album of the decade: Viatrophy – Chronicles

The year list is pretty easy. I only attached myself to a select few albums, and didn’t like much else.
But the decade list is looking to be very difficult. I’ve put together a playlist of 63 albums from 2000-2009. I have been listening to ONLY that playlist for a while now (and will continue).
I had a strong majority of the songs rated. But I’m going back in to confirm/update those ratings. Then I figured on ranking the top 25 mathematically.
I don’t have to worry about my emotional attachment to particular albums either, since that is affecting the ratings in the first place.
I’m doing the same thing, Paris. Only one difference — i’m allowing myself to reorganize the final list cause there are factors that are overlooked when you do it that way; like how cohesive an album is when the tracks are played back to back.
True that, true that. I was going to go in mathematically at first, but definitely edit a tad.
