Computer Speakers
My speakers I had for about 6 years have finally died. I had a set of Altec Lansings that were ok.
One of the wires broke on it and I think it’s time to get a new pair of speakers. My old ones had a subwoofer that was huge and obtrusive. Do I need this? What set of speakers should I get? I’m looking in the $50-100 range. Any advice?

When you say this, are you saying that once you hit the $50 range you are getting some damn good PC speakers? Or are you saying that is you’re spending less than $100 you are just buying crap anyway, so don’t go crazy trying to figure out which crap is better?
I have a $50 Best Buy gift card that I think I will apply towards speakers, by the way.
It’s pretty much all crap. All you end up paying for is more volume and what is essentially uneven sound to cover speaker flaws (e.g., the bass sounds like shit on these tiny speakers, so lets just boost the bass). Unless you start getting optical speakers or using a USB amp for your computer speakers, they won’t compare to anything close to what a receiver can do.
I got the bare minimum for decent sound for mine: some $300 optical harmon kardons. They’re not great, by any means, but as far as computer speakers go, they’re as good as I’ll get without investing in a lot of extra equipment.
