Not surprising I suppose but it means they will need to get two good pitchers over the winter.
Love this quote as well….``I’ll miss the guys on the team and the fans who have supported me. Hopefully I’ll be playing against the Phillies and when I do I want the roughest treatment the fans can give me – when I’m pitching. I’m an opposing player – you have to give it to me.’’
I am sure that Ruben wanted to offer him a one year, incentive laced contract but he knew Myers would have turned it down. Myers will get #2 money from someone when he should be getting #4 money. Good luck in the future, Mr. Myers.
And Matt, I thought the same thing. I still think Madson is the closer of the future, he has the stuff just needs the opportunity. What the Phils need is to get another set-up guy so Madson doesn’t get worn down.
Yeah, need to get our offseason wishlist going.
John Lackey, Chone Figgins or Mark Derosa. Resign Chan Ho, Scott Eyre and probably Stairs. His avg. sucked, but his OBP was pretty good and he’ll take the minimum. I don’t know what the market is like for bullpen guys or who’s available.
And yeah, Myers to Houston. Good ol’ Wade loves our leftovers. He’ll probably sign back Bruntlett too.
John said:Madson will never work as a closer. He seriously looked like he was going to puke closing that one series game. He doesn’t have the head for it.
I think most closers not named ‘Rivera’ would have that same look. He can do it, he needs time. Someone with a 97+ fastball and a killer change-up will succeed in that role.
Go for DeRosa over the other two, he can give Utley a spell which would really help him in the long run. Lackey is a bulldog but with injury problems. Plus what team is going to give him the ‘5th year’ that he wants. Here is a hint, they rhyme with ‘Hankees’. How did Nick put the feeling toward getting Figgins? Something like he would be great for the first two years, then we would start feeling like the Cub fans do towards Soriano.
If they won;t go for Feliz and his option, then they might look at Troy Glaus for a 1 yr deal or even Melvin Mora. But what they should look at is going after Adrian Beltre. He won;t be commanding nearly as much as he did when he went from LA to Seattle because of an injury, but he will give more power and better fielding than Feliz.
Madson could be good at a closer, so much of it has to do messing with their fragile psyche. It’s no coincidence that a lot of the closers now and back in the day were a little out there (no explanation for catchers though, like Daulton). I guess it’s like any position where he just needs to put some time in at it and get used to it. Only way that’ll happen though is if Lidge implodes again or is hurt.
The more I’ve read the more I’m agreeing with you that Adrian Beltre is the man that’ll best suit our needs. Figgins would be nice just because he’s a true lead off man, something J-Roll will never be. High OBP, around 40 stolen bases, switch hitter, good D, etc. But yeah, he’s old, would hate to lock him up and then be plagued with injuries or declining skills. Not to mention his horrible playoff numbers. Derosa would be great too as a bench player, but I’m sure he’s going to look elsewhere. It would be nice to have a utility infielder on the bench who could actually produce. Bruntlett sure isn’t cutting it. What’s Tadahito Iguchi up to these days? Still trying to start? haha.
I understand the need to improve, but good god. Feliz is the weakest link in the line-up, but he’s still a good player….Beltre is not the answer. He had one good year in LA.
And Chone Figgins! Absolutely not! Where would you put him? Would you bench Rollins? No fucking way.
And I already have 20 bucks that Myers will be a Ranger.
And you know what you all sound like, right…Yankees fans. You all hate them, right? Well, welcome to the hypocrite club…

Where to start? This is what you do in the offseason, look at the weakest parts in the line-up and you look to improve. Pat Burrell was getting old and streaky, so you let him move on and sign Raul Ibanez. After the ‘07 season we trade Wes Helms and sign Pedro Feliz. Feliz has been serviceable at best, why not look to improve?
I don’t know where you’re getting that Beltre had only one good year, including ‘07 and ’08 in Seattle.
Chone Figgins would bat leadoff and play 3rd. How does that mean you bench Rollins if they play different positions?
As for the Yankees’ fans comments, that’s out of left field right there. Welcome to the Hot Stove, happens in every city.
OK, you’re right…maybe I was a little off-base with the Yankees comment.
BUT…look at Beltre’s stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=3878
Aside from his obvious steroid/ contract year in 2004, he’s had, what I would consider at least, one other good season…2007. I know he would be a discount now, but he made way too much money in Seattle to have stats like that.
AND…you’re right about Chone Figgins. I fucked up. I thought he was a SS. He’s a nice player and has an awesome name.
BUT…you’re wrong about Hot Stove (a term I hate)…it doesn’t happen in every city. Just look at Pittsburgh, KC, Baltimore. :)
The Phils need to deepen their bench a bit and add one more starter…again.
