Like you said in your email, I really don’t know how you could go see ANY show and not be bored out of your skull. The closest I’ve come is seeing the Boredoms/Lightning Bolt and that was more than enough to make me uninterested in 90% of all live music being performed right now.
Bands like Wolf Eyes really should take up the Butthole Surfers mantle. But instead, they put on the most boring show on earth.

On a similar note, Laura Marling is playing World cafe tomorrow and I am seriously considering going but then I miss the Phillies and I still have to get up at 3:30 am on Thursday.
The other thing that plays more into the danger aspect than anything else is that back then, nobody involved in any of these bands ever even came close to the idea that they could make money doing any of what they were doing. So that absolutely lent it even more of a sense of reckless abandon as well as ridiculous levels of creativity and risk taking. That hasn’t been the case in pretty much any subculture of music since the mid 90’s or so, since any band at this point with the internet and touring and all that can make a pretty solid living no matter how weird or crazy they or their music are. So that lends itself to a certain sense of self preservation on everyone’s part.
Let’s face it when we are in an era where a hardcore band who named themselves Fucked Up can actually make a solid career playing music and getting lots of press and everything else, there’s very little left that isn’t possible to be co-opted and sanitized.
