Scrabbled Comp #2: Outta This World
So I’m working on a standard format for these posts. But since it’s still in the works, I’m going to continue discussing logistics with everyone. Soon, I’ll just be listing the last week’s tracklist, and the current week’s theme. Plain and simple.
The first compilation is titled Scrabbled Comp #1: Initial Compilation. Get it? Anyway, it’s 12 tracks long, which will be the minimum from here on out. Click here to listen from your computer. Go you know where to download it.

For a sense of tradition (and personal ownership), I’m gonna add an opening track and a closing track every time.
Side note, Kevin, I did not include your submission because I already started working on the compilation and didn’t feel like it. Hahahaha.
The tracklist is as follows:
- Notorious B.I.G. “Hypnotize” (Paris)
- R.E.M. “Nightswimming” (ShmEvan)
- Green Day “J.A.R.” (Maggie)
- Glasvegas “S.A.D. Light” (Matthew)
- F.Y.P. “Come Home Smelly” (Sammy)
- Pearl Jam “W.M.A.” (John)
- Andrew W.K. “Time To Party” (Evan)
- A.C. Newman “Like A Hitman Like A Dancer” (Julia)
- R.E.M. “Harborcoat” (Mandy)
- Grandaddy “A.M. 180” (Ryan)
- Elliott Smith “2:45 A.M.” (Christina)
- Santagold “L.E.S. Artistes” (Paris)
Check out the folder for the album art too!
So a reminder of directions is in order here:
- Tracklisting is created in order of appearance
- Feel free to list as many as you feel like (and of course, discuss and argue!)
- Be sure to make it apparent what your top selection is.
- Pay attention later in the week for when I find out what I need help downloading.
And so, without further ado, this week’s compilation theme:
Artists or song titles with a reference to outerspace!!!
My track selection is the Apple In Stereo “7 Stars” off of New Magnetic Wonder.
Comments
Awesome, man. Just awesome. I just downloaded this and added it to my iPod as an album. I’m pumped to listen to it tomorrow.
As for my space song… While I’m tempted to go for one of several obvious Bowie tracks or even Shatner’s cover of Rocketman (space squared), I’m going to have to go with The Advantage’s Solar Jetman. If ever there was a game that truly captured the immense frustration of towing giant gems though space-caves in zero-gravity, it was Solar Jetman. Quite possibly the hardest game for the NES (next to, of course, Ghosts n’ Goblins, but I digress). I really wanted to do something off the American Astronaut soundtrack, but I none of the best songs are especially space-related.
Runner up: Lemon Jelly’s Space Walk.
John said:Paris, if no one picks a Bowie song as their primary, I think you have an obligation as the compiler to pick and include one. Starman or Space Odyssey (Major Tom) are the obvious choices, but the dude’s got at least one or two songs on almost every album worth picking.
You make a good point and it’s the reason I stuck with selecting a closing song as well as an opener. I have others in mind, but I like to see what others pick out first.
Ryan said:Amanda Palmer: Astronaut
Built to Spill: Center of the universe
Cursive:Mothership, Mothership do you read me?
So which one is your top vote? You’re bad at this. Hahahaha
Note: Jeff and Bill are also bad at this. Unless you just want me to consider the first one you list as your top choice.
I’m pretty surprised by the fact that the first couple of songs that popped into my head for this album are 90s alterna-jams:
“Stars” by Hum. I fucking love this song.
“Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden.
“The Apollo Programme was a Hoaxz” by Refused. Kind of a downer, and not about space, but there needs to be more Refused everywhere at all times.
“Mr. Blue Sky” by ELO. Possibly the best song ever written, but I’m thinking we’ll probably rule that the sky isn’t part of space so this will be inelegible.
I’d have to say the Hum song is my top selection.
Kevin said:Travis said:Has anyone picked Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space yet?
That was going to be my other choice. Please make it yours.
As a matter of fact, that was my plan for closing song, as long as Bowie was mentioned. Go ahead a pick. I’ve got others!
christina said:wait, wait. there are TWO r.e.m. songs on the first comp?
Yes, Christina. I noticed from the start, but it’s what the community wanted!
Christina, you must have typed that comment while I was typing mine. You are correct, as you can see!
List so far (for my own help really):
- Apples In Stereo “7 Stars” (Paris)
- Cursive "Mothership, Mothership Do You Read Me? (_Ryan)
- The Advantage “Solar Jetman” (John)
- Flock Of Seagulls “Space Age Love Song” (Kevin)
- David Bowie “Moonage Daydream” (Casie)
- NOFX “Pods And Gods” (Bill)
- Spacehog “Starside” (Jeff)
- Hum “Stars” (Jay)
- The Beatles “Across The Universe” (Evan)
- Beulah “Matter Vs. Space” (Christina)
- Spiritualized “Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space” (Travis)
THESE ARE FACTS: one time, Bill made me a mixtape that was entirely space-related. Of course someone stole all the tapes out of my car at some point so I no longer have the specific tracklisting, but I know one of the songs listed so far were songs on the tape.
These are and are not songs from the tape:
- Jets to Brazil “Starry Configurations”
- The Mountain Goats “Stars Fell on Alabama”
- Blood Red “Saturn”
- Rival Schools “Favorite Star”
- Ash “Girl From Mars”
- Matthew Sweet “Smog Moon”
- Soul Asylum “Closer to the Stars”
- Burning Airlines “Earthbound”
- Ernie [Sesame Street!] “I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon”
- In Flames “Behind Space”
- Cave In “Jupiter”
- Man.. or Astro-man? “Interplanet Janet” (and most of the rest of their catalog fits, but this song is from fucking SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK!)
- Hum “Apollo” which is not better than “Stars” (most of the rest of their catalog works too, at least contentwise)
- “The Universe Song” from Animaniacs (“it’s a great big universe, and we’re all really puny / we’re just tiny little specks about the size of Mickey Rooney”)
I AM HAVING TROUBLE PICKING A FAVORITE BECAUSE I AM EXTREMELY TIRED AND ALSO HUNGRY. must think on. Also a lot of these bands are spaceographers and have multiple thematically-pleasing songs.
- Apples In Stereo “7 Stars” (Paris)
- Cursive "Mothership, Mothership Do You Read Me? (_Ryan)
- The Advantage “Solar Jetman” (John)
- Flock Of Seagulls “Space Age Love Song” (Kevin)
- David Bowie “Moonage Daydream” (Casie)
- NOFX “Pods And Gods” (Bill)
- Spacehog “Starside” (Jeff)
- Hum “Stars” (Jay)
- The Beatles “Across The Universe” (Evan)
- Meshuggah "Nebulous” (Christina)
- Spiritualized “Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space” (Travis)
- Moxy Fruvoux “Laika” (Mandy)
- The Notwist “On Planet Off”
- St. Vincent “All My Stars Aligned”
Maggie, have you made that tough decision yet?
