Studiokitchen: The Restaurant
Shola is (finally) opening a restaurant in Philly… which i’m looking forward to because I am sooooooooooo bored by food in this city…
Studiokitchen fans, hold on to your hats. The enigmatic chef Shola Olunloyo has announced his plans to open his very own restaurant.
Diehard foodies might be familiar with Shola through his now-defunct project Studiokitchen, which involved you and a group of friends paying Shola a prix fixe to cook for you in his house.
Today Shola posts that he is indeed opening a restaurant in Philadelphia. It will be about 30 seats and will serve dinner 5 nights.
Why ?
It works, it’s different and ultimately people want value both in the experience and the cooking, if all the energy went into the cooking and the food rather than the hype and the book matches.
It does not require multiple investors whose vision or interest may diverge from yours.
It is the “un-restaurant”

This whole “studiokitchen” thing kind of reminds me of this thing that my old boss up in Boston brought me to. It was an invite only thing, we met by the State House, and we were bussed to some guys (palatial) house up in Marblehead. Basically, it was an “underground” dining club called love+butter. It works just like that, you meet up with about 15 other people at a non-desrcript location, get bussed to another location, and are fed a ridiculous 5 course meal. It was 50 bucks per person, and our meal was RIDICULOUS! Everyone brought a bottle of wine. I’ll try to remember the menu as best as possible
First course: Marinated watermelon and arugula salad with pesto and some other kind of dressing
Second Course: Lobster and corn soup – it was chilled, and spicy. Tied for my favorite dish
Third Course: Rabbit Bolognese with tagliatelle pasta.(my other favorite dish)
Forth Course: Some kind of pork (I was getting a little tipsy by this course, so things become fuzzier) with sweet and spicy pears and shittake mushrooms
Dessert: Some kind of toffee and dark chocolate confection. It was a mix of mouses and cake, with a little bit of peanut butter.
All in all, it was awesome. Well worth the 50 bucks, plus you meet some interesting people.
Kristin (my old boss) sent me this link when I moved back home so I could find an underground anywhere I go – note there’s none in Philly, but here’s hoping…http://www.saltshaker.net/underground-dining-scene
