Scribblenauts
So Sammy has made me aware of a new Nintendo DS game that seems awesome enough to warrant me buying the system solely to play it. I’m shocked it isn’t being discussed around here.
Scribblenauts is a puzzle game in which you solve problems by writing in and “summoning” essentially any object/person/character you can think of. The word bank from which this game draws is insane, and as a person with very limited knowledge of programming this seems like a really ambitious effort what with all of the interactions and stuff that need to be accounted for. Am I way behind the 8-ball on this like I usually am or what?

I saw some video podcast where a bunch of dudes were trying to find the most bizarre ways to solve puzzles (summoning a baby and stapling meat to it to use as bait for a lion so you could get by it, for example). It looked outstanding. Still, seems something that’d have a relatively short shelf life. I’ll wait for the $5 iPhone version.

I have this same reservation, especially because my attention span for video games is getting smaller and smaller every day. But I’m hoping this is different and that the developers have implemented features to keep you engaged beyond the pure experimental parts of the game.

While we’re on the subject, the next chapter in the Professor Layton series is coming out soon. I saw an ad in NYC about it. Highly recommended: interesting mystery story angle with challenging puzzles and amazing art/music.
It’s already out. and this killed me when the first one was released: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/02/13/
