Crater Lake is pretty sweet, though I’m not sure how close it is to Portland, haven’t been there since I was 12.

I’ve been to both.

SLC as part of my XC road trip. We spent the entire time in a ski-lodge looking hostel waiting for our car to be fixed after it had broken down, weary from a treacherous Rocky Mountain crossing, immediately upon pulling off the highway. We were 18 and broke, so I can’t really recommend anything fun to do, other than getting yelled at by cops for jaywalking (they apparently care about this there). You should head south a bit and infiltrate some Mormon strongholds.

I’ve only flown into and out of Portland, so again, no good advice to give. If you have a car it might be fun to drive along the Columbia and stare at all the meth labs though.

Sorry for this waste of a post.

I was in Portland a few weeks ago. There is so much to do there. Lots of good food, lots of good record stores, lots of good coffee, lots of good parks.

Highlights for me:

1. Columbia River Scenic Highway. Recommended stops are Multnomah Falls (pack your sneakers, the walk to the top is worth it), various farm stands for snacks — holy cheap/delicious cherries, Trillium Lake for a great view of Mt. Hood.

2. Flavour Spot. Waffle sandwiches. OMG.

3. Bamboo Sushi. Sustainable sushi at an affordable price. Best albacore I’ve ever eaten.

4. Tanner Springs Park. Wetlands in the middle of the city. So cool.

5. Avalon Theater and Arcade. Crappy movies, but they have a huge nickel arcade! If you go here, make sure to check out the Stumptown Annex down the street for some great coffee.
