Quickest safest way to lose 60 pounds?
Suggestions? I need to end this bullshit fatness. I am the heaviest I have ever been (no thanks to knee surgery in February), and I am ready to lose some serious weight.
I imagine it is probably better to start any kind of diet when stress levels are low, but I recently figured out that will never happen. So I am starting now. Is sushi healthy? I really like sushi. I like some lean cuisine things too. I am jogging every other day now and I feel like I can do this. I also will start skating and playing hockey again soon so that will help.
I know I need to cut out soda, and fast food. I am not cutting out alcohol though. Actually, maybe I won’t drink beer.
SUGGESTIONS APPRECIATED!

liposuction is quick. running or biking is a start. i am in the market for losing about 30 pounds myself, but i know it is mostly due to not enough exercise. i may start taking yoga classes because i have really enjoyed what i have experienced randomly so far.
i don’t think you’re going to lose 60 pounds in any “quick & safe” way. that’s like someone asking for a product or service that is “good but cheap”. you just need to commit and not be obsessed with your scale.
Evan said:Buy a bike and eat less. I really hate to say it, but maybe give up meat for a few weeks.
and all alcohol, if you are willing to deal with that for a while. screw lean cuisine, just pick up chicken, fish & veggies to make your own healthy meals that don’t contain horrific amounts of sodium and chemicals. frozen dinners tend to taste and smell like shit.
Let me point out that I lost 20 pounds in 2 months last year just by getting rid of soda, and fast food and running 1 mile every 5ish days. So I am quite optimistic. I ended up gaining that 20 pounds back over the holidays, and then another 15 pounds since I tore my ACL.
I think Sushi / Lean Cuisine / Salads / Veggies / Subway / water / occasional alcoholic beverages could work. The key is probably running and being more active. I guess I was just wondering if anyone had tips on losing it a little quicker.
Also, I remember chewing gum and popcorn being very good when I am hungry and have already had a meal.
I completely cut soda out of my diet years ago and never looked back. The stuff, literally and figuratively, is poison. There is absolutely nothing good about it. Go a month or two without it and you won’t miss it. You might even end up finding it too sweet to drink after a while.
Starving yourself isn’t a good idea. Nor is cutting anything out (aside from alcohol, which, really, should go if you’re serious about losing weight — especially beer). Just eat lots of small portions throughout the day when you’re hungry. And eat slowly and deliberately. Your body knows when it has had enough calories if you just give it a chance to let you know.

i drank my life’s worth of soda at movie theater jobs and hardly touch it now. i agree with it being too sweet and generally gross. there are so many better things out there.
Being someone who just squeaks out to 6 feet tall and with a genetic predisposition to both high cholesterol and high blood pressure, according to my doctors and most medical/health/nutrition advice I should be in the range of 175-185 lbs. In 2001 a year after getting married and when my daughter was born, I topped out at 235. I’m a stress and boredom eater with an aversion to excercise. In 2002 I lost about 50 lbs. in just about 6 months doing low carb. This worked and it worked quickly (as it usually does), and while I felt good being lighter and not carrying around the weight of a small child on my body, it made me feel bad in other ways. Not that I was a big fruit and vegetable fan, but this diet made me miss them. But I can’t really say too much bad about it because it did help me lose all that weight (with only a moderate amount of excercise).
I stopped doing low carb and kept almost all of it off and never got above 190 until last year when I hit 200 again. At that point I did nothing more than get a good computer diet tracker and counted and did the basic calories in/calories out thing and I was able to in a few months get back to my fighting weight and I’ve been steadily back in the 175-185 range. The main difference is I work out and run and bike a lot more.
This is a long way of saying there’s no easy way to do it. Just watch what you eat. And like everyone else on here I stopped drinking soda and for me I stopped putting sugar in my coffee (which I used to do A LOT EVERY DAY). And that I think has helped me keep it off too.
i lost 22 pounds in two and a half months doing weight watchers. if you don’t want to officially sign up, e-mail me at cpaciolla at gmail dot com and i’ll give you plenty of pointers. it’s very easy and not only did i lose weight, i got more energy, slept better and felt fantastic. i know a lot about this stuff, i ain’t frontin.
John, last year I used Dietcontroller:
http://www.dietcontroller.com/index.php?set=yes
It’s simple, it’s easy and it graphs/charts pretty well.
If you want something more mobile there is a LiveStrong app for the iphone which is good to. Whereas the interface for dietcontroller and the format is better/easier, Livestrong has a much more thorough nutrtitional/calorie information base. Like every product from every store/major restaurant/etc. which is really helpful.
Both are great just for watching what you’re eating, even if the goal isn’t to lose a ton of weight.
I found that actually paying attention to how much fat and calories was in certain foods made a huge difference. Anything we had been eating that had a lot of saturated fat for instance, we cut out. Fast food stayed as an occasional treat, but because my body got so unaccustomed to the fat, fast food ended up being uh.. a colonic of sorts.
While box meals aren’t the ideal solution, I think they really helped Matt and I because of the portion control. So long as you don’t stay so hungry after eating them that you eat a lot of junk, they can be pretty helpful.
Yeah, I tried boxed low calorie meals as well but just ended up being hungry afterwards and eating more. I found that personally I was better off figuring out which actual foods were low calorie yet filling and satisfying and then eating those. Most of the time the low calorie meals were just not filling enough to do the trick.
Im actually on a pretty strict diet right now myself. Giving up alcohol is out of the question. The drink that has the least calories is vodka with club soda and fresh lime. Its good too. Stick to that. No beer or whisky! I exercise twice a day, 4 or 5 times a week and I take pilates. The weight is starting to come off. Just don’t drink beer and eat a lot of chicken!
Drink more water. Get a 20 oz water bottle. If you drink and re-fill it three times a day, you’ll be on your way.
I lost 30 pounds being a really good vegetarian and exercising every day. Have as many fruits and vegetables as you can a day and pay attention to what you eat.
Even just walking more is a great way to lose weight and/or inches. I live a mile from my school and have no choice but to walk. After a month of, my clothes were getting bigger. If you live in an area conducive to walking, try to go for a walk every day for a half hour. Everyone has a half hour to go for a walk, especially in the summertime.
In regards to your follow-up post…a way to probably lose it faster would be to include weight training because you supposedly burn more calories for longer after the workout. It would only be able 1/2 hour for 3 days a week, so it’s not a huge time commitment. Also, running more often and/or longer would help, but not at the expense of your ACL injury.
My friend recently bought a book called The Ab Diet and it changed his life. Might be worth checking out…the diet part is what he is using, not the Ab part so much. He dropped 20 pounds in about a month.
I haven’t had to lose X pounds in my life because I have become obsessed with going to the gym and eating light for a long, long time (stress relief, gut ‘issues’ mostly). Some of the things that I do to stay that way:
- drinking a ton of water during the day. This might sound gross, but if my pee isn’t light colored or clear, I’m not drinking enough water.
- Trying to burn calories for at least a half hour every day. Usually this involves running 3 or 4 days, but also includes lifting weights, biking or spinning class, elliptical machine.
- Taking the stairs or walking everywhere possible
- I think that cravings are important because it means that you are missing something from your diet. Otherwise, when there aren’t strong cravings, eat light (salads, sushi, soup.)
- If you love alcohol, soda, etc., don’t cut it out completely, just cut it down significantly. Cherry Coke is one of my most favorite things in the world. I have one a day and really, that is all I need or can handle (mostly because of the caffeine). I think the worst part of diets are the ‘restrictions’ because it just makes you want what you cut out even more.
- Use smaller plates to cut down on your portion sizes.
The little things can add up.
Is your ACL still fucked? If not, have you considered boxing training? It’ll help you pack on/retain muscle whilst simultaneously dropping fat; you do equal amounts of strength training and cardio.
I’ve lost about 15 fat lbs since Christmas, but still retained a similar mass and muscle density. I started at 236lbs and now I teeter between 218 and 220, depending on how much bad food I’ve had that week.
I’ve been doing a weekly boxing program for about 8 months and have had significant positive changes because of it. I don’t run out of breath anymore and I’m a lot more agile.
I also lift 3-4 times a week, run 2 miles 2-4 days and go to a 2 hour jujitsu class on Sundays. I still eat like a horse, so I probably should have lost another 5-10 lbs at this point.
If you’re willing to work and eat right, you can definitely get down to 215 by September.
Drink a gallon of water a day. Eat a ton of grilled chicken and fish — protein is your best friend. Avoid all starch and refined foods. Give up beer for 2 months. Work out at least 4 days a week. You’ll definitely get there.
ACL is good to go, but the hamstring and quads still need building before I can get into any kind of intense physical activity. The doctor said I can start skating in July, and hopefully playing hockey again in August.
Boxing training sounds… killer. Like I literally feel like I would die if I did that. Obviously I lose my breath quite easily. I just feel like I would fail, and waste money and time. Of course, it sounds like I don’t have the right attitude… but that’s bullshit. I literally don’t think I can live through any kind of intense cardio workout. Is it normal to feel like that?
Yes it is, but I promise you will not lose weight if you don’t change your mind set. I am not an athletic person, and since I have a bionic leg, I have to choose my daily exercise wisely. I gather since you’ve had need surgery, you are in the same boat. My advice to you is to find some sort of work out that you enjoy.
Before I left the east cost, I payed a visit to the doc and discussed what I can do to help my bum leg, as I notice it felt weak and unstable. I left with some of those rubber band thingers, typically used for pilates. I started working out in moderation, mainly because I didn’t like it. However, I did notice a big difference in the strength of my leg. Since I’ve been in Hawaii, I’ve noticed a major difference in the length of time I am able to work out. I ride my bike around a beautiful park by the beach, and the I go for a swim to cool down. How could you not love that?! I’ve set aside an hour a day to do this, and I love it. Not because I’m getting in shape, or loosing weight, but simply because its fun. It gets my mind off of…well…everything.
I don’t think you are going to be able to lose the weight fast, nor do I think thats good idea. Like anything else, it takes time. Don’t force it. Eat junk in moderation, and don’t go on any silly diets. If you find some sort of cardio work out you really enjoy, you will lose the weight you wish.
