What I love is that I have absolutely no idea what Steve THOUGHT this thread was about. I’ve read my initial post, and his 2 follow ups several times over, and while I can totally see how not reading the other thread he would not know what I was referring. But I still don’t know what he actually thought it was, which for some reason is making me laugh hysterical.
We’re going to go at least 5-6 responses before anyone talks about the actual album, in true Scrabbled Fashion.
Overall Album Rating: 5
- Baba O’Riley 5
- Bargain 3
- Love Ain’t For Keeping 2
- My Wife 2
- The Song Is Over 3
- Getting In Tune: 4
- Going Mobile 2
- Behind Blue Eyes 5
- Won’t Get Fooled Again 5
The Who is probably my least favorite Classic Rock band (the whole concepty, rock opera aspect always kind of annoyed me), and this album as a whole isn’t even nearly as start to finish awesome as any number of other classic albums. But the 3 punches of Baba O’Riley, Behind Blue Eyes, and Won’t Get Fooled again are unfuckwithable. Baba O’Riley alone is in my opinion the greatest classic rock song ever.
The cover of this album rules though (as do a lot of Who album covers) just because they tended to be much more irreverent than their peers.
Side note: I first heard this album when I was 10 years old (1980) and was just getting into music. My aunt was at the time comparatively younger so I worked my way through her record collection and since she was a huge Beatles fan, I learned quickly that she pretty much had horribly shitty taste in music. But amidst the teen pop dreck were After The Gold Rush by Neil Young, Fragile by Yes, and Who’s Next and I ended up loving the crap out of those albums.
I totally agree with you about Baba O’Riley being the greatest classic rock song of all time. Also, I know the cover was them peeing on some sort of pedestal or obelisk, but what was it?
My external hard drive is dying/had died, so I haven’t had a chance to listen to it. I suppose I could just put on the CD… but… c’mon… who has time for CDs anymore?! I have to actually go and look through the shelf to find it, and then take it out of the case and play it! Ugh.
Re-reading this I realized I didn’t mean to rate the whole album a five and don’t remember typing that in. I would guess the overall rating should be an average of all the tracks which would be about a 3.5 out of 5. Although I would weight Baba O’Riley even higher than a 5 so I’d round it up to a 4. But can’t give it a five since it’s not perfect.
- Baba O’Riley (5): I remember the first time I heard this song on the radio in the back seat of my parents Pontiac station wagon. It blew my mind and I spent the next two months playing just this song (and never listening to the rest of the album) on my Fischer Price record player. It still gets me. The entire end of the song with the violin… goosebumps. Goosebumps for a minute straight with chills running up and down my spine. Goddam. What a great song.
- Bargain – (4): I always skipped this song cause, let’s be honest, Baba O’Riley should not have opened this album. There’s nothing that can follow it. Especially those melancholy first 7 notes on the cello. It makes me not want to hear comes next. But then it starts kicking ass. And even though it’s car-commercial overuse has diminished it a bit, it’s still pretty rad.
- Love Ain’t For Keeping – (3): I don’t know that I’ve ever really paid much attention to this song. I like it. I just don’t want to listen to it much. Maybe I’m just still reeling from Baba O’Riley
- My Wife – (1): Yeah, I don’t like this song at all.
- The Song Is Over – (2): It has it’s moments, but for the most part I’m just not into it.
- Getting In Tune – (1): Ugh, hate this.
- Going Mobile – (3): More energy, cool keys. More into it. Still wish I was listening to Baba O’Riley. No wonder I never listened past the first track when I was a kid.
- Behind Blue Eyes – (5): Apparently Fred Durst has not ruined this song for me. Cause it fucking rocks. It’s amazing how the tone shifts. They almost sound like a different band here… more like their earlier stuff.
- Won’t Get Fooled Again – (5):
. . .

YYYEEAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Seriously, the organs at the end. Fucking. Love. It.

This is the first Who album I’ve ever listened to. I’ve heard their songs on the radio or at friends houses, but I’ve never sat down and listened to one of their albums cover to cover before. With that said…
I find this album pretty disappointing, especially since it starts off so strong with “Baba O’Reily” and “Bargain”. The middle 5 songs, starting with “Love Ain’t for Keeping” and ending with “Going Mobile”, are all forgettable. Not that they were poorly played, I just have no desire to go back and listen to them. It’s probably because the first and last two tracks on the album are so good.
This would have been a killer EP if it just had songs 1,2,8,9.
KEY
5 = Great
4 = Good
3 = OK
2 = Meh
1 = Horrible
