John is hungry

John Coltrane's Giant Steps, note by note.

One of my all-time favorite jazz pieces, it’s so cool to have that visual component and actually what what he’s doing. All those accidentals!

This came up again on Reddit and I wanted to make sure I’d posted it before. I’m surprised no one commented on it. It’s truly amazing to watch. Hoping Paris sees this.

Yes, it’s super cool. It made me grab up more Coltrane albums than I already had.

Still makes me wish all this music theory stuff would finally just “click” for me.

Depends on what the theory is, I guess. I can see something like counterpoint needing to click, but scales, adjacent keys, transposition and the like? It’s just a series of arbitrary rules that our ears have been trained to appreciate and understand so that we all might have a common framework to work in. There’s no understanding it — just memorizing it.

I’m glad to hear that, Hutch. Because I get all the little parts. I get scales, I get how to build chords. I’ve just waited around for this “big picture” kinda thing to click.

I suppose you could research how western (“classical”) music theory was developed. That might give you some insight into the why and make it more than just an arbitrary set of rules.

My mom says I was an accidental.

Really? I can’t imagine how she ever even got knocked up. I hear she’s flat.
