This is awesome, but really, do people ever compose pieces like this anymore? I mean, it’s amazing to hear this stuff played to perfection, but think about the guy that wrote it.

I suspect they do, but they rarely leave the music conservatories and universities around the world. I don’t know what the point would be, though. Liszt had his time and place and he explored new ideas and themes and techniques. Why reinvent the wheel? I think the last true period of innovation in classical music was the 70’s minimalist stuff. Even those guys are just refining their ideas now, instead of coming up with new ones. Who knows if there’s anywhere for classical music to go. I suppose you could make the argument that bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor picked up the pieces and ran with it in a new direction, but even they’re apparently done with it.

I choose my friends for their good looks, my acquaintances for their good characters, and my enemies for their intellects. A man cannot be too careful in the choice of his enemies.
