oh no no no you’re right. maybe i said it in the wrong way. i meant i’m making vegas work ON a budget. like, cheap airfare. free room. drinks paid for. just wanna know suggestions on cool bars, restaurants, shows, oddities anyone knows of.
I’ve only been to Vegas once, and I was 18 at the time, on the return leg of a cross-country road trip. I slept in the front seat of a ’93 Toyota Corolla in the parking lot of a Circle K while there. As such, I have little more to add to this conversation.
I’m also an amateur degenerate gambler, so I’d waste my entire vacation in poker rooms getting fleeced by professional degenerate gamblers.
Ahh, Vegas. Where three days feel like an eternity. With any luck, you’ll have some good weather. Strolling the strip and people watching is always a good time.
So, the bars out there are ridiculously expensive, so my friends and I figured out how to drink for next to nothing for a few hours (mind you, I was 22 when I went and still in college. In other words, broke). It’s called the Keno lounge. Sure you can drink for free at the tables or the slots, but if you’re lucks not up, you can end up blowing 100 bucks in a few minutes to get a few free drinks. So, go to the Keno lounge. You and your friends throw in 10 bucks and buy something like 100 games at a quarter a piece. The lounges typically have their own cocktail waitress, so throw her a ten each and tell her to keep the drinks coming. That way, for 20 bucks, you can get a little toasty and STILL have a chance to win (I don’t think there was a day where we DIDN’T win almost everything back). Then you can go to the bars and be satisfied with the fact that you’re not spending 10 bucks per Coors Light (BLASPHEMY!) after the 30 dollar cover charges.
Also, the Orleans on the strip has cheap tables. If memory serves me right, Freemont Street has all those old seedier casinos which are definitely cheaper to play at. If you have time, check out Lake Las Vegas. It’s really nice!
awesome thanks for the suggestions.
i have a feeling that a lot of stuff is gonna be paid for me by my friend who i am going with. he is “the king of vegas” he says. he goes several times a year, always gets free stuff, ends up partying with b- celebs and has a great time in the process. i’m really looking forward to it.
He knows. That’s Tom that you played poker with and met again the next weekend Tom. Brother in law Tom. I’m guessing you drank a lot of girl drinks whilst playing poker? Unforgivable, Paris. Unforgivable. This is why I’m getting tired of the scrabbled recently. You and your girl drinks. Stop ruining things.
i LOVED vegas. Our favorite bar was the Nine Fine Irishmen in the NY NY hotel. All food out there is super cheap unless you go to fancy restaurants. Get guys to buy your drinks. When my friend and I went in college, we spent 5 days, and got everything for only $500. Also, when you check in to the hotel, ask if they have any available room upgrades. Most of the time they do. Oh and biggest cost saving measure: don’t order room service. or prostitutes.

i wish you could go and stay with us. you could go and NOT stay with us…
Also, Tom, I’m a male. Did you know that? I’m just unsure about what level of mockery you’re throwing my way.
i was wondering about this too…

It’s absolutely awesome. We sat next to a 25 yr old girl who lived in vegas, and saw every show, and she said it was the best show she ever saw.
I totally agreed.
most Cirque du Soleil shows are brilliant, especially “O” – better than the Beatles.
I’ve got to agree. I’ve seen almost all of the cirque du Soleil shows available to me, and O has been far and away the best. Go to the big coke bottle on the strip. It’s the Vegas equivalent to the NYC TKTS booth in Times Square. It’s down near Excalibur Tropicana and MGM grand.
The Rio has the most ridiculous buffet you’ll ever go to. EVER.
Um, did I mention the people watching? Do yourself a favor and have a few margaritas and sit outside the Bellagio and watch the train wreck. Vegas, while it attracts some of the most beautiful people in the world, also attracts some of the biggest catastrophes. Marvel in the hawaiian printed shirts all around.

This is long, but I’m trying to be helpful…
I am going next week and am so looking forward to it. We’ve been once before, but with the BF’s 80-year-old grandparents who wanted to see the Grand Canyon and some indians.
I’m doing my best to be very budget conscious and am doing a lot of research on that right now. If I come up with ideas after the trip, I will let you know. I scored rooms at the MGM Grand for $49 a night and $200 roundtrip flights, so we’re starting off pretty good. I found that room deal through Hotwire.com and booked it through MGM’s site. I think it comes with other random spa discounts and stuff.
There are halfprice ticket booths for shows, but Cirque isn’t one of the ones offered. My work friend/Vegas regular recommends Vinnie Favorito, a comic, and those tickets are available halfprice. He uses www.smartervegas.com to get discounted Cirque tickets and he highly recommends Love, which we are going to see.
He also told be about Fat Elvis (or is it Big Elvis) that does a free show at Bill’s Gambling Hall at 3pm most days. $1 margaritas too. Not to mention there are fountains, lions, and other weird shit to look at all over the place.
Old Vegas has the cheapest minimums, if you like table games. (Also the best white trash people watching EVAR.) Roulette had a $4 minimum at Binions in the middle of the night. The good thing about sitting down at a table game is that DRINKS ARE FREE! They are kinda small, but who cares. You can still get a bottle of beer for nothing but playing a hand or two of blackjack. Old Vegas (Fremont Street) has a ceiling light show that I felt was lame, but people like it. They also have cheap eats there.
Oh, and I met Vanilla Ice in Columbus Ohio (at a McFaddens, actually) with a bunch of fellow cancer survivors. He was really really nice to us.
That’s about it. I so can’t wait for this vacation.
