John is hungry

David Geffen may intend to buy the NY Times and turn it into a nonprofit.

This could be really awesome.

This seems unlikely to me.

Based on Monday’s NYT strategy meeting, the idea has been explored at length by the current ownership but was ultimately deemed impossible for a company the size of the Times.

I think the idea is totally feasible and should be seriously looked at for smaller publications because it can work well, as evidenced by the St. Pete Times and Gotham Gazette.

Now if the Times’ new multi-faceted approach to boosting online revenues is a total failure, then I think anything is possible. But this is years off at the earliest.

About The Scrabbled

The Scrabbled is a group of people blogging about and linking to all manner of things. Usually we argue and make fun of each other. Everybody knows everybody through somebody so there are no strangers here. Most of us have even met in real life! If you happen to personally know someone here and would like to start arguing with and/or making fun of someone, shoot John an email and ask to sign up. Otherwise, you're just going to have to read in relative silence. Sorry.
