Lost: Pre-Hashing The Finale, And The Season

Tonight’s the anticipated finale of Lost’s 5th season. Since it’s an exciting night for fans, I figured I’d kick off our speculation on what we all expect to see tonight (since it’s fun to be proved wrong).

Also, since the actual episode post will probably give itself over to interpretation of what we just watched, I’m curious what everyone’s favorite (and least favorite) moments of the season were.

My predictions:

• Sun will babble about her husband, husband, husband, husband so many goddamn times that the space-time continuum will rip itself asunder just so it doesn’t have to hear it anymore.

• Despite an awkward arrival by Kate on the sub, she’ll become a mirror of Sawyer in last season’s finale by heroically sacrificing herself (not necessarily fatally) to help him and Juliet.

• Jack will actually succeed in permanently changing the future, wiping out Oceanic 815’s crash… which might be the only way to get Desmond back within the Island’s grip. Of course, this doesn’t preclude the survivors from still ending up back with the rest of the Ajira crash victims in a weirdly different 2007. Time may change, but whatever happened to them individually has already happened, right?

I’ll follow up with my thoughts on the best and worst parts of the season later. Just wanted to kick this off.

I actually think Sayid is going to die. I just feel like it will be the culmination of the tragic story arc he’s taken.

I also think Jack will fail to undo their timeline and will not only cause the Incident, but be responsible for Sayid’s death. But due to cliffhangage, we probably won’t get confirmation that he didn’t change the future until next season’s premiere. I still think someone will need to change the future after Jack’s failure as the main plot of season 6, and I think that person will be Desmond.

I have heard that Bernard and Rose may appear in the episode tonight, and my hunch is that we’ll see them dead in the caves. (as i think i’ve discussed here before)

I’m also guessing we’ll see a ghost Charlie appearance.

The things I’m most intrigued about are the Locke/Jacob plot and what’s in the silver box with the Shadow-of-the-Statue crew. I have no fucking clue about where either of those things are going.

I agree with Bill about Sayid dying. Here’s the thing though, at this point with what we know, will any character dying have any emotional impact whatsoever? It did with Charlie, and it did when we though Jin had died. But now that we know that all bets are off and anything can happen within the space/time continuum to change things, will any death scene from here on out elicit anything other than a “meh”?

I didn’t hate this season but I didn’t love it either. I hated the reliance ont he time travel (seemed like they used it as a crutch or get out of jail free card for too many things).

That being said, I liked 2 things a lot: 1) That they answered a lot of questions and closed some loops as to who people were and how they were interconnected to one another. and 2) Sawyer and Juliet. I know people still don’t like Juliet but I thought their story line proved that both of them were being played by good actors. I never though Sawyer was a bad character, I just thought he was written too one dimensionally. And I thought Juliet’s ice queen deal was also contrived. But I really believed their romance, I really believed that they found contentment with each other having landed at that point in time. And I really believed that it hurt Sawyer to again have to sacrifice his own well being and happiness to save others like he did towards the end of last season.

I’m confused. Are you saying he’s the only character whose death would be emotional? I agree he’s one of the ones who would (along with a few others) but I more meant that with the time travel element in play, anyone’s death is going to feel like a fake out. When Charlie died it was emotional because he died. With Jin everyone was a little suspicious. But now that they’ve pretty much negated all laws of linear time, any character dying is going to be met more with a “Yeah, we’ll see….” rather than a “Holy crap! I’m devastated!”.

Yeah, if Hurley dies, it would be a “HOLY SHIT!!” moment, but with this time-travel hooey, he could be all well and alive by the end of the series.

We will find out who Jacob is tonite, that I am sure of. Any guesses on who?

Also, Sayid getting killed wouldn’t surprise me one bit. And I wouldn’t be totally surprised if they kill off Sawyer.

I think deaths can still be shocking on this show: check out Faraday. Totally unexpected. If Sayid dies it wouldn’t trouble me nearly as much because, well, he’s not a very good man. He’s done some heroic things and has often had the best intentions, but he’s recently proven to us that he’s incapable of changing himself for the better. And if everything else is about to change, he deserves to get left behind.

I think this is my second favorite season overall. I’ve loved it, mostly thanks to an incredibly tight structure. There are echos, parallels, and resonant mirror images abounding in these 5th season episodes. When Hurley drops a funny comment about the sort of questions that might get him exposed on his arrival in Dharmaville and then those same questions are the ones to bite him in the ass many episodes later, I laugh at how smoothly it’s all been pulled off.

Other stuff that rocked:

• Hurley hurling a hot-pocket.

• Ben strangling Locke to death, while looking vaguely miserable about it.

• Caesar getting shotgunned ten feet across the sand.

• Sawyer conning his way into heroism and finding that it fits extremely well. His romance with Juliet was/is one of the most natural and touching relationships on the show.

• Kate’s flashback episode. I’m reluctant to give credit to a character and actress I dislike so much… but I really bought her tears when she left Aaron behind.

• That look on Faraday’s face when he sees a young Charlotte and realizes that, despite any resistance he’ll attempt to muster, he won’t be able to help trying to save her.

• Smokey ripping apart some Frenchmen.

• Sayid killing a man with a dishwasher.

• Fahey!

Stuff that I didn’t like:

• Sun, all season. She’s been given some crap writing and forced to skulk along whining about her husband the entire time. It’s almost as if we’ve entirely forgotten that she’s a strong woman capable of taking care of herself.

• Illana looks dangerously similar to Michelle Rodriguez, and that grosses me out.

• Faraday’s abrupt departure and return from Ann Arbor, his sudden change of heart on the nature of time. Felt kinda rushed, unless there’s something we’re missing here.

• That lousy submarine CGI.

• Re-explaining things over and over. They restated the laws of time travel and each character’s destiny so much that it started to feel repetitive.

• Not enough Fahey.

Agreed: I’m 99% certain that we’ll get to see Jacob tonight. They can’t tease that one again this late in the game and not reveal it. At the very least, I think we’ll see Jacob in a time before all these castaways started zipping through time and space.

Kevin, you asked if any character death would have emotional impact. I was just making the point that a Hurley death would have a big emotional impact, regardless of whether or not it was “final” in the grand scheme of the show. How could anyone not get upset about anything bad ever happening to Hurley!?

These are all great and would make my list for the season as well. In addition, I would add the Miles/Hurley time travel discussion, the Hurley/Chang “Are you from the future?” discussion, the statue, and the tons of Widmore info we got this year.

Oh, yeah! That random young Widmore reveal was great, along with the slow accumulation of detail around the character. Nothing he did or said in Season 5 would lead you to believe he’s an evil man… but I’m still unable to trust him.

Everything with Miles, to me, is gold.

Kevin, I like you said about Sawyer and especially Juliet.

Justin, I also enjoyed the 1950s group when Jughead was around.

I think:

  • Locke is going to learn that Jacob looks just like him, and so he’ll have a hard time killing him. Who knows, Jacob might be Locke.
  • Richard Alpert actually sticks his hands in the plotline instead of just advising. In other words, he displays some powers.
  • Kate dies in order to help Sawyer and Juliet. She knows Jack is going to try really hard to get their lives back to normal (which means Kate goes to jail). She also sees that Jack is never going to be with her; he just doesn’t believe she ever really loved him. She’s done and wants to make good.
  • Sure, Sayid dies too. His story arc seems to be over.
  • Jack screws up trying to “right” the loop (?). But Hurley, in a goofy but endearing way, manages to get the Lost crowd another chance. He has luck like that.
  • Sun and Jin communicate in some way but don’t actually see each other.
  • Miles talks to Faraday, dead Faraday. Miles does other awesome things.

That’s all I can think of. I’m really looking forward to tonight.

My predictions for tonight:

- I make homemade General Tso’s chicken and it is delicious.

- I drink beer and hope that it helps ease the almost guaranteed disappointment that Lost will deliver.
