First Class Trip
…as a teacher! Big things are happening this weekend. First of all, the weather is beautiful. I hope everyone gets outside.
But more importantly (to this post), I am heading out tomorrow morning on an overnight school trip with the 5th-8th grade I teach.
We leave early at 6:00am and head out to Gettysburg for a full tour and exploration. Then, by evening, we double back to Lancaster for check-in at the hotel. After the sleepover, we head out for a day of tours and shopping in the Amish countryside.
Each student is required to bring a parent along. And all of the four teachers (math, science, english, history) had to put together an assignment packet for the kids. So the middle-schoolers will not only be busy and occupied, but they’ll also be supervised!
I have never been to either place, but combined with my lack of responsibility and the weather, I’m seriously looking forward to an enjoyable weekend.
As always, with a Scrabbled post, I ask you all of any particular things you suggest I see or do while out there. I am bringing a camera for sure (my dad demands photos). I am also absolutely finding the Amish-made jalapeƱo strawberry jam that Sammy had me try once.

stop here in Lancaster, buy mexican wrestling masks for all the kids & film the repercussions.
the pickett’s charge reenactment will be fun. the tour guides will make the kids do it. see if you can do the gettysburg ghost tours. they are creepy and shit and really fun.
what i remember is cobblestone streets with bars/restaurants/shops along that you have to walk downstairs to get to.
amish people are odd. so i don’t get into lancaster.
I used to live in York — smack dab between Gettysburg and Lancaster on Rt. 30.
My favorite part of Gettysburg is Devil’s Den because climbing on/through big rocks is fun.
Lancaster has lots of fun little things to do in the city. If you get time away and have a chance to eat, I always loved Senorita Burrita
My friend Mike has a really fun record shop there, too – Mr. Suit
Oh, and the Amish, which I admittedly got worn out on while living in Central PA. But that jam sounds fun!
My sister and I made a point to buy fudge from the Amish. It was like ‘buy 4 pounds, get one free!’ Sounds great, right? 5 pounds is a LOT of fudge… but you just stick it in the freezer and have it anytime you want. Plus Amish Woopie Pies are yummy!! They are like super soft cookies with a real creamy frosting stuck between.
The two women running the show out here aren’t revealing specific itinerary details, but I’m really hoping for some free time. I want in on both of those pies mentioned.
Gettysburg was eerie and beautiful. The visitor center set us up with some basic information. But the views out there on the field were incredible, and all I could do was visualize the movie scenes. Little Round Top was wiiild.
