Lost: Some Like it Hoth
Didn’t know the episode title ’till just now when I looked it up. I like the episode even more now!
Yeah, so um. That was a good episode. What does Paris usually do for these things? I have no crazy theories. Miles is friggin’ great and the episode was friggin’ great. Any thoughts on what happened to that dude? I got the impression that the bullet in his head wasn’t what killed him. It was the filling going through his brain. Sounds like he tripped a magnet that pulled is tooth out the back of his skull?
Sammy questioned while they were building the Orchid whether or not the decrepit Orchid we saw in the present/future is decrepit because something happened or because it was never finished. I forget — do we know what the Orchid is for at all? I mean, aside from spinning that wheel.
Anyone catch anything else of note?

I think it was implied that Luke and Vader would have talked it out, thus circumventing the third installment (and negating the existence of Ewoks, whom Hurley hates).
Miles episode. Niiiice.
A little number heavy early on, no? Maybe it’s something worth noticing for this episode. I saw a room #4 and a 3:16 on the microwave? Biblical reference? Or is the use of “3” fitting to that one theory I read on here. Was it Bill? The idea of a number being off?
Miles is special. Reminds me of Walt a lot. I look forward to seeing Miles major role with the island.
The VCR read: 3 17 51 19, by the way. Grid 334?
So those fellas had hard hats on. I’m thinking that dead man’s accident occurred in The Orchid (donkey wheel station). Okay, electromagnetism is involved.
Miles is questioning is fate at his mother’s death bed. He needs to know why he is here. Reminds me of Locke. Obviously repetitive themes are huge on this show. I wonder if Miles thinks that the island has a purpose for him like some of the others do. Maybe Miles’ abilities are the result of experiments run by his father_, Pierre ChangChang?
“Where is his body?”
“Somewhere you can never go.”
Uh… the island? Yeah.
Hurley is working on a notebook. Any idea if that’s the same notebook that Daniel carries around? There’s an obviously large Dharma logo on it. I can’t find a screenshot of the cover of Daniel’s journal.
I really enjoy that the 70s Losties have no idea about the purge. I can’t wait for Lost to revisit it as if it were in the present. Although, I guess the Losties get uninvolved with Dharma before that happens now don’t they?
Pierre thinks the experiments with the polar bears are “ridiculous”. There were thoughts about some past experiments just being cover-ups for the “real thing” being studied.
Whoa! Score! Pierre is his dad!
I agree with Naomi. Miles needs to meet some of the classic dead people, such as Christian Shepherd and/or Smokey. $1.6 million. That reminds me of some price that Ben mentioned when the Freighters first showed up. It happened during Eggtown and Miles asked for $3.2 million from Ben to lie about finding Ben dead.
The Hatch! Hurray! That was Jughead there, right?
We know that guy who scooped up Miles in the black van. He ended up on the island via the Ajira flight. And he is against Widmore, for the record. That guy mentioned “teams”. Widmore is on one team but is Ben really on the other team? Or is the other team unknown at this point? I don’t consider Ben to be the opposing force to Widmore anymore. It’s almost like Widmore vs. Island, maybe?
Wow what on Earth has Daniel been up to? I’m hoping for an episode about him next week.
p.s. I like watching this show with Lostpedia open. It’s fun to explore and remind yourself while it’s all happening. It’s a really great thing to do with a second viewing of an episode. Plus it makes for fuller commenting on blogs!

It happened building the Swan, not the Orchid. They brought the body to Chang at the Orchid after the fact. He already would’ve been aware of it if it happened there. Besides, it was Radzinsky’s crew, and he built the Swan model in the Arrow and was all afraid that Sayid saw it.
Paris said:No idea about the purge? They’ve talked about it numerous times. They’re all well aware of DHARMA’s fate and kept asking if Sawyer and crew were trying to stop it (but Faraday told them they couldn’t change anything). In 1977 they’re still 15 years off from the Purge, so there’s no chance any of them will still be in that timeline by then. I assume next episode we’ll learn about how they’re trying to get out of ‘77 with Faraday’s help.

Small, insignificant oversight that in the end is not going to interfere with the plot in anyway what-so-ever?
To get this truly resolved, one might have to speak with the producers about it. Ask “Was that a photo of Justin Chatwain that the dad was holding in his hands during the Miles episode?”
I also don’t think he would be in the cast list for the episode for a picture. I could be wrong, but who knows.
Again, in the end it was most likely and easter egg. And if you are correct in the fact that the picture most likely took place in 2004 when he was an undercover cop in the 90’s (whcih I would most definately agree with you) then the producers made a mistake.
But since again, it really is not an important part of any plot line whatsoever, I say to you sir…How bout them Flyers?
I heard a good theory at work about this idea of a third team: it’s the Ann Arbor people; whomever’s responsible for Dharma. Obviously someone else out there knows that the island is special. It doesn’t makes sense for them to just give up after having all of their people wiped out. Of course there’s going to be a third party in the Ben vs. Widmore war.
So the question becomes… how many of the people on this second flight are Dharma 2.0?
Is this signifying the grand return of the DeGroots?
It became really clear to me last night, after seeing the guy in the van that landed with Ajira, and hearing him ask the same question that the people on that Ajira flight are there for that third team. I think they’re going to start to stir things up in two weeks.
Did anyone not notice the chalkboard that Jack was cleaning? IT had Heiroglyphs all over it. It had the division of the three kingdoms of Egypt on it, and some glyphs that looked stunningly like the ones that appeared on the counter in the hatch that appeared once the timer hit 0. Beneath it, it read: “Writing of the works (words?) of God.” It was a little bit smallish and I don’t know how to zoom on shit so I couldn’t tell which it was.
This episode was filled with all sorts of trauma, emotional and tooth-related, spilling out of peoples brains. They should’ve titled it “Daddy Issues A-Go Go”. I liked the Miles and Hurley humor (especially that line about Miles’ mom standing behind him on the lunch line), but especially dug how it just layered itself on top of some dark, dark stuff. These two goofballs are the opposite ends of a serious question: Better to just ignore the weirdness around them and selfishly live their lives? Or do they need to face down what’s happening?
Seems like they don’t have a choice. Inevitability creeps (with a clanging finality in that awesomely unsettling scene where Hurley watches the numbers get stamped on the hatch door with increasing horror) and things are rushing towards an impasse whether they like it or not. People can’t help their natures, I guess… Kate is going to care for other people’s children in ways that will land her in trouble. Sawyer is gonna right hook the wrong person. Hurley is going to blurt out the wrong words. It can’t be helped and Faraday’s arrival reminds us of his theory that nothing can be avoided. Like Juliet says: Well, here we go.
Not that Faraday hasn’t tried. I’m sure he’s spent the last couple years putting theories to the test and seriously creeping out a couple of our Losties as children. Or making sure their future traumas get lined up dominoes, like the Science-Minded analogue to the Others’ Faith-Based Jacob.
I think it was easy to miss the important moment in Jack’s development as a leader. Instead of going angry douchebag apeshit at Roger Linus, he takes a minute to think carefully and tries his hand at a more subtle approach. Wonder where that’s gonna lead.
Seems pretty clear that there’s a grim group of new Dharma recruits attempting to reestablish control over the Island in 2007, now that Ben’s jamming signal has been disabled. I don’t think these agents are aware of each others’ identities for security reasons, so they’re asking cryptic coded questions to figure out which passengers are part of the plan. In seasons past, I pegged them as a group of nervous hippies that would have balked at doing much to defend their turf… but now we see that they’re angry, militant nervous hippies with a bunch of weapons. And those stations didn’t come cheap, I’m sure. Plus, history repeats. Ben purged the Dharma folks once, he tried his best to forestall their return upon his exile, and now he and Locke are going to prep their Purge 2.0…
Are the Swan and the Orchid related? The Orchid, with ancient wheels and magic, seems more important overall… so maybe the Swan will power whatever awful experiments they’re working up over there.
I believe Pierre Chang is going to intentionally drive his family away from the Island before the Purge in an attempt to spare their lives. And I’m sure he’ll be aware of Miles’ true identity before it’s all over.
I don’t think the numbers mean anything that’s worth explaining. Sure, there’s all that non-canon Equation That Saves The World stuff… but I don’t think we’ll get anything conclusive like that before the end. Just background stuff, that literary technique of letting symbols accrue meaning through repetition. Sprinkle it over episodes to steep ’em in dread, a reminder that the Powers That Be are dripping into everything.
Hmmm… maybe Chang’s figured it out. We know he’s aware of the Island’s potential for temporal weirdness and his son is enough of a dismissive prick for his behavior to ring familiar.
Pretty sure we’ll find out about Faraday’s adventures in the next couple episodes. My brain can’t help but obsess on how he might be the Dharma parallel of Jacob. He’s pure science, seems to know a great deal more than he lets on, creates grand experiments and lists, and everyone else treats his theories like the word of god. Wouldn’t be surprised if we finally, finally get to see Jacob himself within a couple episodes of learning a little more about Faraday. Also wouldn’t be surprised if the Losties have to fight to protect the Island from these two competing forces that claim to know the One True Destiny of this place.
I could see Sawyer sacrificing himself to save the Losties. He did it last season, and now the stakes are higher. I don’t think they’ll kill Hurley, though, since he’s too useful as the writers’ audience surrogate and font of levity. There’s no one in the cast that can easily fill that chubby void.
Well, after doing some digging around, apparently we will find out who Jacob is during the season finale. I want to say it’s Locke, but that seems so…predictable? Maybe it’s Desmond.
Also, someone will get killed off and when the actor found out about his death, he was shocked by it as he thought he was going to be around until the end. My initial thought was Hurley, but now Sawyer makes more sense, esp. seeing as Hurley/Miles is the new Hurley/Sawyer.
Hurley and Sawyer are 100% fine. They’re too well-liked by fans and ABC doesn’t want to lose viewers. Sawyer dies and the entire Females aged 18-59 demographic jumps ship.
I don’t think Pierre yet knows about Miles, but I think he will find out from Daniel. There was a pre-season comic con video with Pierre Chang and it sounded like Faraday talking to him from behind the camera. I won’t go into the whole thing, but find it and watch it because it’s cool!
