Lost: Namaste

Boy oh boy, how about that music? Here we go again, my thoughts in order of appearance…

That woman on the plane woke up and said, “Sara?” Who the hell is Sara?

I must say, I’m still making myself crazy over what the big picture is here. But regardless of the outcome, the journey has been a great one. This show has managed to hook its desperately obsessed audience so well, it’s as though we were on that Oceanic flight too. I absolutely enjoy the tension, love, friendship, new trust and general emotion that has come out of this group of characters. The scene at the shore in the opening hit me with countless memories of their relationships. Could it be that Lost is just a long-winded television show trying to prove that the journey is more important than the destination? Is that the grand theme here?

Juliet whispered, “How did they?…” in response to Sawyer secret about the Returnees. I loved her in the last episode and I’m still a big fan, but I also still don’t completely trust her. For being on the show for so long, she hasn’t played her big part yet in my mind. Anyway, that whispered question didn’t convince me. (Oh shit I’m typing this out and Kate’s name just didn’t make the list) (Oh double shit Juliet just showed up).

Did Sun not bring the right materials to time jump with the rest of the Returnees? Her name has 3 letters (hahahaha).

“You wanna come?” What a creep Ben still is. “I lied.” Ooooh Ben, the tables have turned! I was wondering how Ben ended up passed out in the infirmary. Good for Sun for flipping the role of manipulative liar.

Juliet said, “the timing’s gotta be right” in response to having a child with Sawyer. I thought that was a cute choice of words given all the temporal jumping going on.

Ethan! How did we not see that one coming? So at first you may think this is disappointing, but if you think about it, Ethan is now another Dharma fella that turns to the Others side later.

And speaking of the purge, when does Ben the child show up? Soon? What’s the timeline on that? I thought for sure he’d be on this episode’s submarine. (Edit at the very end of the episode holy crap Ben is already there)

Note, according to Christian’s photo search, the Returnees (or at least Jin) are not in the Class of 1978. He had to find ’77 specifically.

Jack didn’t get pissed off at all toward Sawyer. He didn’t even talk back. He is a changed man! “Yea” it is a relief!

So a quick look-up to Wikipedia on “Namaste” during the commercials unveiled something of interest. Namaste, in South Asian culture, is a combination of “namah” and “te” which literally translates to “I bow to that (divinity) inherent in you.” So my wild theory of the week is that the Great War that Widmore mentioned is an epic war between gods (maybe even specifically Egyptian gods). Each of the Losties are in some way representatives of particular gods based on their back stories. Hurley could be Bes, god of luck. Jack could be Horus, god of health. I got those both from some quick Googling. I wonder who gets to be the God of Fertility? You can think of the rest.

The preview for the next week’s episode has Sayid saying, “Now I know why I’m here.” He’s gotta kill Ben! And then… and then… right as Ben is about to do something ultra evil in present 2007, he suddenly stops existing as Sayid makes the kill in 1977. Of course, if that happens, wouldn’t Ben have already ceased to exist? Are these two weird time periods happening at the same time?

Is that some weird characteristic the island holds? Every passing moment is happening at the same time. Cause and effect is instant? does this make any sense at all?!

This episode gave me evidence towards my hunch that Christian Shephard might just be a manifestation of Smokey. The last good hint was the smoke alarm going off in the hospital lobby when he appeared to Jack.

they’re not in the ‘78 photo i’m guessing, because it is more of a New Recruits photo op, which they wouldn’t be in any other year after.

Juliet is totally the God(dess) of Fertility, if that is a theory. i groaned when Kate and Juliet were sort of facing-off at Induction thing. i STILL hate that stupid love square going on. i hope Juliet punches Kate in the mouth and then goes on to be some sort of awesome omniscient character.

i KNEW that kid was Ben. i also think maybe there is some weird child-rebellion going on that leads to the Purge – otherwise, why would Ethan still be alive? Ben is a revolutionary.

i kind of want to go back and see when Ben and Sayid first meet – if there is any sort of recollection on Ben’s part.

also, does Ben end up having a massive crush on Juliet when he’s a kid, and THAT’S why hes so smitten with her as an adult?

where is Daniel? what happened to him?

I am pretty sure the Others took Ethan with them when they purged the Initiative. I am also sure that he was so young that he would have never remembered that it happened.

I only said it because John made such a big deal of getting Paris all fired up. Sorry, Paris. Your insult was incidental.

I’m pumped to read all this tomorrow. I don’t want to read it now and you’ll understand why when you’re done reading my comment. I just wanted to come here and say that Sawyer’s speech to Jack in his house — the whole Churchill thing and everything surrounding it — was one of the best moments of the entire series. It was Sawyer truly becoming a totally new, completely different, and exciting character and I loved it. For the first time in as long as I can remember, I am excited about the characters of Lost, not just the events.

And now I’m going to go read a fucking book cause I don’t watch television cause Winston Churchill/Sawyer said so.

Given that Horace’s ghost said it was dead for 12 years, the purge would’ve happened in 1992. So Ehtan would have been 15.

I used the word rarely when I mentioned watching television. I’m just going to say that. It’s okay though, I’m not fired up anymore.

When the Oceanic plane first crashed, Ben sent out Ethan to get names. As Ben received this information, I wonder if he recognized some of the people’s names from when he was a child in 1977. If so, perhaps it was such a big deal for them to go back to make sure Ben met them again. But then the whole purpose of everything feels cyclic and useless without an actual grand scheme.

okay that’s cool that everyone comes up with the whole epic war theories but do you actually think that specific information will come out in the end?? like, at the last episode there will be a narrator saying all that shit? maybe i’m not articulating this very well.

is everything an undertone or do you think that these crazy theories will actually be SAID on the show?

Yes. He says something about how he didn’t have any mustard for Sayid’s sandwich. Sayid gives him a weird look like, “Hey….how did you know I like mustard?”

I think he means when Sayid meets adult Ben on ths island for the first time, back in season 1 or 2. That weird look Sayid gave was “Hey… you look like a little kid version of Ben. Oh shit!”

I agree with you John: the characters are getting to be as compelling as the background mysteries… which is funky, since it’s mostly the characters I didn’t like before at the top of that list. Sawyer’s effortless leadership is an interesting fulfillment of his character arc: he’s always had hero in his blood but needed to con his way into it first. I like that. Also think the lady playing Juliet did an awesome job. When she hears the lost have come back, you can see an immense sadness sinking into her eyes as she realizes that she might lose Sawyer to Kate. Never stated overtly, but done very well. I have half a mind to think Juliet left Kate off that manifest on purpose so she could go see her for herself.

Loved Ben tromping through the forest with Sun and The Fahey. Heck, I’d love just watching Frank snarl his way through reading a phonebook out loud. This season’s been great at splitting up the huge group into interesting little combinations.

Also been a lot of lying and deception, which I guess typical. Everybody lied to somebody about something, you could feel the cast squirming around each other defensively, carefully protecting themselves. I’ve started thinking lately that the Others are a band of time-strewn refugees, who might be festering with a similar brand of hostility.

Scary creepy things, too. Christian standing in the cabin while smoke curled around him like some sort of, um, Monster.

Other tidbits:

Looks like Claire might have been lurking in the decaying ruins of the Dharma welcome center with Christian. And is Christian corporeal? He seems to be able to pick things up and move them around.

• The plane crash was pretty damn cool. I liked how the Island, bursting through the clouds, filled the cockpit’s field of vision like a hungry, sentient menace.

• César is dumb. I guess he’s supposed to be ominous and mysterious, but I immediately start wishing the scene was over.

• From what we’ve seen, the Dharma Initiative has a really odd relationship with the Island. They’ve arrogantly dug in and given themselves all the goofy luxuries of home and seem to stumble around with angry-nerd impunity… but everyone freaks out and starts having nervous breakdowns at the first hint of any danger. Seems like they know the Island could shake them off like some fleas. Or maybe some of the higher-ups know they’re fated to be doomed and still trudge ahead on their work anyway.

• Where is Faraday? When I hear he’s “not here anymore”, I assumed that meant he’s gone completely insane.
