I think I might go to H&M (cheap, ethical clothes!) after work today to replenish my wardrobe a bit. I’m still wearing the same polo shirts I bought when I first got my job three years ago and they’re starting to look pretty ratty.
…What should I get? I saw Kevin Rose rocking a button-down plaid on Jimmy Fallon (http://bit.ly/yuOdJ)and I thought to myself, “Huh. Plaid’s back? I think I could rock plaid…” But then I couldn’t picture myself in it. Which led me to two conclusions:
- I have no idea what looks good on me anymore.
- I have no idea what other people think looks good now.
My only real requirements for clothes (other than that they’re cheap and ethically made) are that they’re comfortable and I don’t feel ridiculous wearing them (the latter of which rules out all forms of sweats and athletic wear). My biggest issue is that I have a real hard time even thinking about what looks good without feeling like a phony egomaniac. So this is all quite difficult.
So… help?

i am pretty much obsessed with plaid. see: the new plaid patterned shoes i bought AND my new plaid coat. and yeah, you could argue it’s a “scene” thing but it’s transcended all that and plaid is the way to go, in my opinion.
okay, hutch…let’s see…
i say you throw a few patterns into your wardrobe. i was just on the h&m site and they have some crazy model guy whose clothes dissolve on and off when you pick outfits. h&m is a little too much for me but i think it might be okay for guys, although hutch, i can’t see you rockin the mr. rogers sweater thing.
i say you pick up a few shirts from “threadless:”http://www.threadless.com/ and maybe some fitted collared shirts. throw in a plaid shirt or two.
Just bought three on americanapparel.com! I even found a promo code for 10% off: http://www.retailmenot.com/view/americanapparel.net
This thread is probably dead, but John, just so you know, H&M clothes are like disposable clothing made out of paper towels — they’re fine and look good until you wash them. Then, not so much. You’re better off spending another few dollars toward a shirt from a department store (or whatever else you already bought from the links above that I’m not clicking on).
I’d never buy jeans at H&M as they’re pretty obviously very flimsy. I put holes in the knees of jeans like what so I usually just buy thick regular Levis. The shirts I got, though, seem pretty nice. A bit papery, but we’ll see.
As for why no thrift store… these are work clothes. I can’t be looking like a bum.
