Music Emergency
I’m not sure who here is aware, but my sister, Natalie, is pregnant. She is having a girl but has not released the name of the child, though we all know it starts with the letter ‘M’.
So the due date is March 20th, which apparently, is the 10-month mark of the pregnancy. So in actuality, ‘M’ can enter this world any day now.
I just received a text message from Natalie about some cramps and pre-labor contractions.
I have to throw together Baby’s First Mix CD as soon as possible now! Any suggestions? I’ll write “from theScrabbled” on it. I was aiming for some soft, pretty music and maybe something with an educational edge. Who knows? What have you got?

I have a bunch of lullabye cover albums by someone/some group called “Rockabye Baby!” with tracks by Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, and Radiohead. They’re actually all kind of awesome. Vibraphones and toy pianos with no vocals.
But here are my pics:
- The Cure – Lullabye
- Radiohead – Kid A (the song). Or Pyramid Song. Or Sail to the Moon.
- Aphex Twin – Track one (cliffs) one selected ambient works vol II
- Tchaikovsky – Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies
- Erik Satie – Gymnopedie No. 1 (either the original piano version or Nigel Kennedy’s chamber arrangement)
- Debussy – Arabesque (absolutely gorgeous and the scales are entrancing…)
- The Rachels – Family Portrait
- Steve Reich – Music for 18 Musicians (make a mathematician out of her!)
- Chopin – Nocturnes
- Clogs – Tids of Washington Bridge (off of Lantern)
- Jose Gonzalez’s cover of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop”
- Massive Attack – Exchange
- Bill Evans – RE: Person I knew
- Miles Davis – All Blues
- Chet Baker – I Get Along Without You Very Well (A MUST!! The tiny tones… the simple vocals… it’s perfect)
- Stars of the Lid – Daughers of Quiet Minds
and lastly:
The Beatles – Fucking everything they ever wrote.
Especially:
- Here Comes the Sun
- Norweigian Wood
- Nowhere Man
- Michelle (M NAME!!?!)
- Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
- When I’m 64
- Dear Prudence
- MOTHER FUCKING BLACKBIRD. JESUS FUCK. AGH.
- Cry Baby Cry
- Because
- Her Majesty
Johnny missed the ultimate Uncle/Aunt song:
Stay up late by David Byrne.
I know it’s not a soothing lullabye, but how can you pass up these lyrics?:
baby baby, please let me hold him
I wanna make him stay up all night
Sister Sister, he’s just a play thing
We wanna make him stay up all night.
This song was my brothers and sisters theme song when John and Britt were babies. heh
For some reason, I was a huge fan of the sitar as a tyke. I’d recommend some Tabla and Sitar jams from Ravi Shankar.
Maybe some Sufjan Stevens. His voice is so SOOTHING! I’m thinking Decatur, Or, Round of Applause For Your Stepmother.
Mozart’s Magic Flute is kind of silly and good for kids.
Julia is a sweet song by the Beatles… Not that I’m biased or anything
I love the Unknown – Clem Snide
Maybe Take Five by Dave Brubeck?
The entire Pan’s Labyrinth soundtrack is great for a little kid. Also some Final Fantasy. I’ve often described his music as what I would imagine the soundtrack of my childhood dreams would sound like.
John, where did you find that lullaby cover CD? Is it available to torrent anywhere?
