The Graphic Novel
So, admittedly, I am in a slight graphic novel phase (or craze maybe). I just bought Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid On Earth by Chris Ware.
The small-print inside-cover introduction is quite clever, grammatically tedious and self-referential at times; naturally, I love it. It starts with a brief history of literature, and continues on to the portability of the book, the role of entertainment in our short lives, a skills quiz on reading comics, an exam for those who failed the quiz, a flowchart-styled display, and finally a few reproduced articles.
I also like the clean, bold lines and squared-up alignment of the art. The color palette is pleasing to the eye as well. Nothing seems too vivid; they are a strange combination of morose and pastel.
It looks promising for now. I’ll revisit this post for a review on it. But I thought we’d talk about graphic novels for a little while, as I am quite uncultured in this regard. I also chose to purchase The Dark Knight Returns.
Comments
this is my workmate’s boyfriend’s favourite-ever graphic novel and it will probably be one of my next purchases.
i’m still working my way through some other projects, too and i’m not a big fan of overlapping various books so it might be awhile.
it’s a dangerous thing for me to work a mile away from one of the area’s best comic shops.
Mandy – we indeed have two copies, one of which is all yours if you want it.
I love when comic writers just go nuts with text. Like, they do this whole story in these little boxes, and then think “Well, crap, that won’t do,” and then fill up all the space they can with these crazy, dense manifestos. Alan Moore is good for that – the prose bits at the end of each issue of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen were almost as entertaining as the book itself.
I read this book a loooooong time ago and loved it but I honestly don’t remember a thing about it except for it generally making me rather morose. I should read it again.
The Dark Knight was fanfuckingastic. Very DC-Meets-The-Watchmen. But really, you need to read Transmetropolitan. It’s so unbelievably good.
I’ve also really been trying to get around to Preach and Y: The Last Man, but there’s no all-encompassing trades for them so reading them would cost a lot of money. I might just download the cbz files.
