Mickey Rourke at the Spirit Awards
So, Mickey Rourke won best actor at the Spirit Awards, whatever the fuck those are. This would usually be pretty insignificant, but his acceptance speech was just flat out amazing to listen to. I heard the unedited version on Howard Stern this morning, and I can’t see the video in this link here at work so I’m not sure which one it is, but either way I’m sure it’s worth a listen.

The dude doesn’t even know Marisa Tomei’s name, and he openly talks about how his publicist’s job is to tell him “who to fuck”. It’s great, and makes me wish even more that he would have won the Oscar.

Yeah, that was a pretty damn funny speech. The Spirit awards actually used to be a pretty big deal, especially in the mid to late 90’s with the whole indie film resurgence. That was also when the Oscars were still rewarding bigger, more popular films each year and indie films were shut out but still doing well and deserving of their own praise (hence having them on the same weekend as the Oscars). But now that the Oscars seem to be making every effort to not nominate anything too big or too popular, there doesn’t seem to be a point to them since most of the things being nominated for Oscars are independent.
they actually tell you at the independent spirit awards to curse.
kev, i wouldn’t necessarily say most of the things being nominated for oscars were independent. really, the only biggies were the wrestler and milk. other films were independent like frozen river and vicky cristina barcelona, but only garnered a few nominations.
if anything, the spirit awards made me want to go see films i missed this “awards season” such as wendy and lucy, ballast and synedoche, new york, which i know jonathan really enjoyed.
Yeah, but the majority of Oscar nominated movies lately are much smaller in scale and budget and not blockbusters (the indie/non-indie line is as blurred in movies as it is in music). But I mean 10 years ago the awards were going to Tom Hanks, Spielberg movies, Titanic, etc. and the Spirit awards were for like Harvey Keitel in Bad Leiutenant or something. There just wasn’t really any crossover. It may not be indie versus non indie but not too long ago Gus Van Sant and Darren Aronofsky movies would have not been on the Oscar radar even and would have only been praised at the Spirits. Even Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button only became blockbusters after all the praise and nomination.
I’m all in favor of it because I’d rather see good, smaller movies get the nods and make some money than gratuitous big blockbusters. My clarification was more in response to Jay’s “whatever the fuck those are” statement than any big declaration of fact.
kev, yeah i can see that. i definitely appreciate the crossover and even if i get a few movies out of it that i haven’t seen yet, nor heard, i think it’s successful personally.
i was watching live at the time. it was sisters’ sleepover night and both of my siblings were in bed by 11 p.m. hence, me watching them alone on the couch.
Jay said:Note: I am in no way a movie buff, so my “whatever the fuck those are” comment was made completely out of ignorance.
Oh, I know. That in no way was something that most people should no about. Even as someone who likes movies quite a bit, I don’t think I would know what they were if I hadn’t worked in the movie industry in the early 90’s.
