Lost: Jughead

Wow so much to take in this episode. Some great links being created. Definitely experiencing some first and second season connections. I just wanted to get a thread going but I only have one thing as of right now…

…Faraday’s mother is in L.A. There were only two other instances of L.A. being mentioned (if I remember correctly). One was Miles being hired to clean up a ghost? And the other was the mysterious family that Claire was told to bring her unwanted child, Aaron, to (the reason she got on the plane). Is this connected to Faraday’s mother perhaps?

Charles Widmore appears to age normally. So there hasn’t been an incredibly historic battle between him and Ben necessarily. Also, the battle lines are beginning to get a little blurred. I’m not sure who is on what side anymore (namely Faraday, Juliette and Richard). Faraday left somebody a vegetable, Juliette seemed really really calm the entire episode (she knows way more) and Richard might be on a third side of this unknown war.

I’ve lost some understanding but gained major intrigue. Thank you Lost!

LA has been talked about all the time. it’s where the flight was headed. it’s where all the six (and ben, and various of his associates) all are. it’s where sayid’s nadia was when charlie stopped dudes from attacking her, right? LA is just like, the stopover before you get over the pacific and find the island (except in the case of richard telling juliet they were going to portland). i don’t know that it’s super significant other than being a sort of hub of activity.

It’d be awesome of it turned out that the guy Widmore neck-snapped was Ben, and that the island healed him. That would make me loose a bodily fluid or two.

Baby Charles Widmore totally led John Locke & Company to the Others Camp. oops!

It seems as if Charles Widmore lost the immunity challenge and got banished from the island. That’s why he wants back on the island so badly.

We have seen a young Ben before, when he went to the island with his father, so I don’t know if that could have been the guy whose neck was snapped.

Yeah, dude, LA is where everyone is. I thought that was the most significant part of that revelation: that Desmond might meet up with the other 6 (and be roped into going back?).

BY FAR the two most interesting thing of the episode is that Richard is still young in the 50’s before he (apparently) realize he could time travel (and thus time travel seems less and less likely the explanation for his eternal youth) and that Widmore was once an other. Perhaps Ben is also in that same camp in the 50’s as a baby. Perhaps Widmore was lined up to take over as the Island’s leader and it was given to Ben instead, thus causing the rift between them.

Ben’s definitely much younger than Widmore. The ben-as-a-kid stuff was after the others’ camp was much more civilized.

We are thinking/saying the same things. High fives all around. STUPID SAMMY.

WHOAH. Just read this on from Maggie on Bill’s board (I wish we could combine the two for these Lost posts):

check it, the pop up video episode said mrs hawkin’s first name is eloise.
eloise is daniel’s time-traveling rat.
also, the girl on the island with the gun.. weren’t they calling her ellie?

FUCK. Did Faraday almost get shot by his Mom!?

Also from Mags:

but, this also opens up the possibility that widmore is his father, and that hawking is also penny’s mother.

Faraday said that Ellie girl reminded him of someone. Perhaps he was thinking of his mother and not that girl that he vegetable-ized.

My thoughts:

• Jeremy Davies is awesome, but he really needs to eat a sandwich. Other than that, I like his performance but don’t have enough information to pin his character down. Much how Locke would do anything for the sake of his faith in the island, I think Faraday would do horrible things for his belief in science.

• I wouldn’t be surprised if a certain buried device of mass devastation features prominently into the climax of the show.

• Characters that work: Desmond and Penny. There’s something refreshingly direct and strong about their relationship and earnest, helpful demeanor that make it really easy to have them explore the thornier backstory of the show. They’re not the type to be evasive and question loyalties all the damn time. Also, everything will become more resonant when Penny inevitably dies.

• Characters that don’t work: Juliet and her poopy-stink face. It’s not the fault of the actress, she’s just been written into an awkward corner. The character’s always known way more than she’s let on, but she’s forced to be needlessly cryptic now lest she deflate the narrative of the time-skipping castaways.

• Is there any question at this point that Locke will become Jacob?

• The show seems to have an unhealthy obsession with women as mothers and vessels of birth. What’s up with that?

• I’m assuming these 1950’s Others STILL aren’t the originals. We’ve been shown before that they’re pretty much like hermit crabs, wriggling into whatever new things each set of visitors bring to the Island. They aren’t soldiers.

• Ready for my insane theory of the week? In the most bizarre paradox of all, Desmond and Penny’s little baby Charlie will grow up and become the ultimate of big bads: Charles Widmore.

O.K. am I the only one totally and completely convinced at this point that Richard and Ben are unequivocally good guys? The attempts to play both sides and paint either/or of them as possibly, maybe evil or bad are becoming less and less convincing as the show goes on. Yeah, they leave just enough questions in the air but I see a ton of evidence that they are on the side of “good” and anything pointing to them being scheming or bad or whatever are just not concrete enough to hold up for me.

But it seems like every single person who watches this show is either still convinced they are the bad guys or still on the fence.

I feel the same way. Ben really turned “good” for me when he told Hurley that he needed to come with him. The way he explained the situation to him was heartfelt in a way that we have never seen Ben act befroe.

Richard we assume is good because of 1)the help he has given Locke and 2) his relationship with Ben (of which we know little about. We also know little about Alpert himself, I would love to see a backstory on him.

I’m also with you, Kev. There’s little question in my book (though it would make for an interesting twist if Widmore were to become the good guy in the end).

I actually thought that that was exactly what we were seeing. The U.S. Army set-up shop on the island to conduct an H-bomb test (which clearly would have been a bad thing for the island) and the others rose up and kicked their ass, hence Miles’ dead soldier ghost-whispering. They then, in fact, pulled their hermit crab thing on the Army camp, took their supplies and weapons, and even started wearing their clothes (which is why Widmore was wearing a uniform that said “Jones”).

I agree… that scene with Ben in the previous episode wiped away all my suspicions of him being a bad guy. He’s pretty twisted, probably a little mad, but he’s not evil.

I’ve never really assumed Richard to be bad because he operates at odds with the traits that define the villainous acts on the show. Richard listens to others and doesn’t seem to put his own agenda above everything else.
