On a lighter note: The Most Awkward Inaugural Dance Moments

the way you latch onto every alarmist thing that crosses the table is hilarious.
but on a more serious note, i thought this was obamas weakest speech yet. i was hoping he would just get up there, tell me its aways darkest before the dawn, assure me that the dawn was coming, and then announce he was the batman.

I don’t think that’s a particularly alarmist, conspiracy minded or fringe theory or anything. I’ve pretty much heard tons of people from all political affiliations and all races express the same concern and sentiment. To not think that it’s not at the very least slightly more so a concern with the first black president in a country with a fairly spotty racial record is pretty naive.
I found the whole thing painful. I cared about the actual swearing in, the speech, and maybe some of the walking and parade, but not really. What I certainly did not care about was hearing 4 anchors blather endlessly all day long when, aside from the aforementioned 2 events, none of this was news. Maybe they could have kept the video stream going and talked about something, anything more substantive, but instead they chose to just fill air time with meaningless gibberish solely to fill air time. I think if anyone was afraid of assassination, it was the networks, in that they were afraid they might miss it, otherwise maybe I wouldn’t have watched news all day long and not learned a damn thing.
I must say, I watched FOX for about 20 minutes before a producer showed up and changed it, and it was the most refreshing part of the day, simply because they all weren’t verbally blowing Obama.
“black president in a country with a fairly spotty racial record "
and there is the problem in your statement.
amazing how far he got in such a racist country.
i really dont think its as big a deal as everyone wants to make it out to be. but hey kev, me and you will never agree.
unless its about the beatles.

Not to mention that there’ve already been a few arrests for assassination plots.

But… we do have a fairly spotty racial record. There’s certainly no denying that. And I don’t think anyone’s saying the country is racist. Obama’s presidency is a testament that it’s not. But there is a history and there is a large, violently racist element in a decent portion of this country.
Plus, have you forgotten that there’ve been one to three assasination attempts on Presidents in our collective lifetimes?
there have been attempts on lots of presidents lives, im not saying you wont see any on him, but i think no more than any others. maybe slightly more, racism wont ever die for some people. but i highly doubt he’s going to spend the next four years dodging bullets like its ’Nam.
and more importantly: IT WAS A JOKE. cause you see, john is always worrying about stuff. and i thought it was funny to mention it. my bad.
Yes, but the point is that it adds a whole other contingent and demographic of crazy people to the mix and a whole other reason for a group of crazy people to target him.
And Derrick, where did I say this was a “racist country”? I said we had a pretty spotty racial history. I mean I know things like decades of slavery and segregation and Jim Crow and all that were probably really just people whining and complaining, looking for hand outs and wanting to just make white people look bad, but still. And also, note that as you did I said the risk was “slightly more so”.
But since you were joking…never mind. Especially since I chastized John last week for not picking up on written sarcasm/humor/etc. So…right back at me.
When I say crazy, I mean like the 10 people who were either institutionalized or died in an attempt that was clearly insane.
Also, one anarchist (stupid enough to be considered insane), a few filthy sinking commis, and some foreign nationals.
I counted 2 legitimate attempts by Americans; Boothe, who probably was a racist, and the lady who shot Ford.
Source which is open to interpretation.
I don’t think there’s much to worry about. Some borderline retarded good ol’ boys wouldn’t stand much of a chance harming the most well protected man on the planet.
