Leaving From New York (almost)

A plane crash landed into the Hudson river near 50th St. at around 3:30 this afternoon.

I think everyone survived, so I don’t feel bad in saying that I look forward to how awful my drive home is going to be tonight. I also look forward to consistently worrying about planes crashing into my house, especially given how often I dream of that scenario happening.

I flew into JFK at noon today and skipped my connecting flight to Philadelphia at 5:30 because a plane ride to Philadelphia from New York is just silly. Now I am so glad I did.

No thank goodness! I had the longest, dumbest layover at JFK so we took the train home. It just would have been a scary mess to take off from New York and see a broken plane in the river!

The almost instant reaction to this from those in the area was simply amazing.

A passenger on one of the ferry boats Twittered about it and took one of the first pictures. You can see all the plane passengers standing on the wing as the boat comes towards them.

That picture he took is absolutely wild. I can’t believe those safety slides for exiting the plane really do work so alarmingly well as floatation devices. I almost don’t believe that’s real.

I think the coolest thing about this story is the bad-ass pilot.

The first time in the history of commercial aviation that a jetliner landed on water without fatalities. And the dude even walked down the aisle twice in the sinking plane to make sure nobody got left behind.

Makes Han Solo look like a pussy.

One article said the pilot had a side business as a risk management consultant.

Talk about irony. Bet that business picks up with this under his belt…
