i’ve been curious about doing the no-shampoo thing for a while, but i just have so freaking much hair and vinegar makes bill sick.
i might try the deodorant thing in the summer. i had lush powder deodorant (which is basically this recipe, as far as i can tell, plus tea tree or coconut oil) and it didn’t really work for me.
the article you posted links to a description of it many times. it’s basically using baking soda to wash and apple cider vinegar to condition. there’s more to it than that, but yeah. i know a lot of people who have tried it, and mostly they said after about a month adjustment period, it works out great. but there were some people who didn’t stop having terrible problems with their hair for like two months.
My mom, who is not “green” beyond using compact fluros by a long shot, has been using vinegar and olive oil for nearly all of her beauty needs for a while now. After going through a phase where she bought in to all of the expensive face creams and what not, I think she stumbled upon a vinegar recipe book and hasn’t turned back.
I absolutely refuse to do anything with vinegar as the smell of it makes me want to vomit, plus add in an adolescence smelling nothing but vinegar on Saturday mornings as my mother used it to unclog the tub, awful.
However, for those of you who want to try it, she massages a bit of vinegar into her scalp, let’s it sit for a bit, rinses it, and uses olive oil in lieu of conditioner. Instead of face moisturizer (very dry skin runs in my family) she uses olive oil. She swears by it, and has nary a wrinkle at nearly 60.
She’s also turned to making virtually all of her cleaning supplies with vinegar mixtures, including Drano (we have an old house with troublesome plumbing… anyone with the same issue knows how much drano you go through), and bug repellent (we get the “moths” in the spring time)
I’m more than happy to ask her methods if anyone’s into it.
I use Tom’s of Maine and it works pretty great. I can usually find it in Target or Shopright no problem. It just doesn’t work as great as I’d like it to. That is to say, my old right guard gel could take me well into the next day before I experienced any B.O. Tom’s, on the other hand, gets me just past dinner.
On the bright side, Tom’s has a lovely ginger smell that masks the BO even after it has allowed it to surface. That is to say, even though I get BO quicker with Tom’s, the BO is less offensive.
Still, I’m very curious about this DIY method as I like anything this easy to make that involves less consumerism on my part.
Here’s the response from me mum:
“I recommend that he invest in…
Honey, Garlic, & Vinegar by Patrick Quillin (1996) a great book…and I bet he can get it real cheap on line…I use it all the time…Some day you will come around…
Olive oil…I use as a moisturizer…"
Aside from the superfluous use of elipses, hopefully it’ll help. Notice her typical Italian mom dig with the “someday you’ll come around.”
