Fuck. Despite the shit music they churned out in later years, and despite pulling the ultimate stab in the back to one of their biggest and earliest supporters, that band still sends me into the nostalgic pangs of “old guy” mode because there is just absolutely no way humanly possible to fathom just how completely fucking out there that band was for their time in the early to late 80s, particularly live. I mean like just ways of disturbing weirdness and bizzaro in every way possible that are still next level stuff even compared to today.

And actually one time when we had a discussion of how most music nowadays was simply rehashes of old stuff and there’s nothing “new” we both agreed on Animal Collective. But then for no reason in particular I went back and was listening to the Butthole Surfer’s earlier stuff and realized how much AC took from them with the whole manipulated vocals, tribal drumming, etc. but with not 1/10th of the weirdness. And that’s one of the things that made me appreciate AC more I think.

Fuck….that fucking band.

I definitely hear Butthole Survers more in, say, the Liars than I do Animal Collective, but I don’t think there’s any doubt that they all share an experimental psychedelic seed. And I mean experiential in the truest sense of the word: dudes recording things that they had no plans of recording and trying things cause “why not” and making it work.

I just fell asleep on the floor listening to their first two EPs and LPs. While I do love me some Independent Worm Saloon, goddam if that early stuff isn’t amazing. When asked what bands I could travel back in time to go see, they’re in my Top 5.

I was hoping this video would have included some music.

Yeah, you’re right. I think that’s cause Liars are darker and creepier whereas AC is more upbeat. But yeah the psychedlic experimentation runs throughout.

What video were you watching? There was tons of music throughout and a performance at the end.

John, have you read “Our Band Could Be Your Life”? The Chapter on the Butthole Surfers is jawdropping. I’m not sure if I ever lent that to you. It’s a pretty quick read despite it’s length and it covers some great bands.

It’s one of those books I’ve been wanting to read for a while but never got around to it. I’ll have to read that chapter next time I’m up. I generally hate to borrow books from people cause I have no idea when I’ll get around to reading them.

….Sorry, Sammy!

Yeah, this one I’ve read and don’t need back. It’s actually a very easy read and each chapter is stand alone so you can pretty much read it, put it down and not pick it up again for a while. I’ll try to remember to bring it down this weekend.
