My New Favorite Christmas Album
As I’ve made many of you painfully aware, I have a thing for 8-bit video games. Especially the music. So when I found out about 8-bit Jesus, a project by some dude who guys by the name Doc Octoroc, I flipped out. It’s a comp of classic Christmas carols and hymns done in the style of classic Nintendo tunes. That isn’t to say it’s just done with an 8-bit chip or that the themes are mixed. That would be lame! No, this is way cooler.
The dude “performed” the songs in such a way that they sound like they’re from a specific game. If you know your Nintendo soundtracks, you’d know that certain sounds, tones, and modes are specific to certain games, even though it’s all on the same chip. So when I We Wish You A Merry Faxanadu, I didn’t even have to look at the track name to know it was an homage to the classic action-RPG. Carol of the Belmonts features the arpeggio harmonies found all over the Castlevania soundtracks. Icarus! the Angles Sing features the same simple bassline and tinny little snare rolls of Kid Icarus.
I love this album so much, I donated to get myself a physical copy. Yay!
