Should we prosecute the current administration and other government officials for war crimes? Will we?

Should? Yes.
Will? Not a chance.
The media will never let it happen without manufacturing a huge self fulfilling backlash against it. When democrats are in power they are supposed to be forgiving and conciliatory and bipartisan.

Perhaps a few people if they demonstrably and repeatedly crossed the line, but otherwise no.

What kind of precedent would that set?

I’m more worried about the precedent it would set by ignoring the war crimes.

Yeah, but by ordering this stuff in the first place, which a bipartisan group has now determined that Bush and Cheney knowingly did (and in fact Cheney openly flaunts that he did) they’re pretty much admitting that they violated international treaties and conventions and that innocent people were tortured and died because of their direct orders and actions. It definitely sends a worse message if we do nothing and say “Yeah, whatever” than if we hold them accountable. Otherwise at what point do we have any moral standing around the world (not that we do now, but at what point can we begin to get it back).

And yeah, o.k. this type of stuff has always existed in the background on very rare occassions and exceptions but the precendent has been that the highest offices in the land were hands off on the subject. That’s where these fuckers crossed the line, demonstrably and repeatedly.

About The Scrabbled

The Scrabbled is a group of people blogging about and linking to all manner of things. Usually we argue and make fun of each other. Everybody knows everybody through somebody so there are no strangers here. Most of us have even met in real life! If you happen to personally know someone here and would like to start arguing with and/or making fun of someone, shoot John an email and ask to sign up. Otherwise, you're just going to have to read in relative silence. Sorry.
